I agree with InfoSeeker--if I had unlimited funds and I got to customize my own home, I'd definitely consider it, too. Either same location or maybe Belle Terre.
I'm (in order) Old Field, Lloyd Harbor, Belle Terre.

ohhh, I forgot Lloyd Harbor...such breathtaking homes out there. Now that I think about it, do you think $1.2 million could buy something grand in those neighborhoods?

The houses across the street are about 5-10' elevation.

I can understand wanting to build new, but the observation tower seems out of sorts for the area, especially when it could rise 88' above sea level.
So the tower really wouldn't block views for the houses across the street if it's elevated at 39' while the houses across the street are elevated only 5-10', right? As long as the tower doesn't block views or becomes an eyesore, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

It's basically going to be an eyesore pretty much by definition, since it's going to be something like 50 feet taller than any surrounding structure.

Yeah, I thought it was going to be on a large parcel of land with no immediate nearby homes. I guess if it's on an elevation, add then the height of the structure, the houses across the stree will most likely see it.

Having previously served on our local zoning board for years, I'd turn them down flat.

And I'd only ask for a height variance if I needed to raise my house to comply with FEMA building standards in a flood zone.

It will give them early warning that the Philistine's are storming the gates!

I want to build a moat around my house, South Shore Nassau, 60x100 lot. Do you think I'll have any issues doing this? It would be heated of course for the gators.

Architecturally -- it sounds as though it won't blend with the 100+ year old houses across the road and adjacent it to it.
The tower will be at one of the highest elevations in Old Field, and the property immediately surrounding the house slated to be razed is cleared -- there are no trees to buffer it.
