The sky pencil holly is prone to snow damage. I've had good luck with Skip Laurel :

Skip (Schipka) Laurel Creates Dense Evergreen Privacy Screen | What Grows There :: Hugh Conlon, Horticulturalist, Professor, Lecturer, and Gardener

Whatever you plant, invest in a soaker hose and a timer.

I'll keep this brief. Hick's is way too expensive, go with the Stables Nurseries reccomendation. I have also purchased nice plant material from them. The Leland's will grow too large in that area. Go with the arborvitaes or skip laurels. Either one can be grown as a hedge or you can keep them with a little separation in between.

^ hope it's a LOT cheaper because that is a hike and a half (over an hour from western nassau). Would be nice to check out a new place but not THAT far. Probably worth it if the OP can save hundreds.

Vigalotti in Westbury also has some good deals. Not sure if they deliver though.

Their delivery price was fair from what I remember.

Hmm, I'll have to ask my husband because I don't pay attention to that "stuff." I just tell him what I want and it's up to him to make it work within the budget.

Just bought 50 6' privet, balled and burlaped, from Stables in Moriches. $1100 delivered.
Arranging the install for this Sunday, which is another $750.

50? How big of an area are you planning on planting these?

I've been trying to call Stables for the past few days but their lines are either always busy or their phone lines are down. Has anyone tried Cheap Sam's? I'm looking to get six 2'-3' Emerald green's. I've called a few places and the one place that has them wants $50 a plant. Is that too much?

I have about a 100' run where I want to grow a formal hedge.

Privet = yuck + maintenance nightmare. Had a 75' run on my property when I bought my house, they had to be trimmed twice a season and regardless of what I did I could not keep them looking nice. They always looked gangly and overall unsightly. They do grow fast, though, so if you're in a rush for this hedge you're looking at the right plant. I've since switched everything over to boxwoods. Yes, they take a long time to fill in, but only need to be trimmed once a season and retain foliage year round.
