If so what measures have you taken to remedy the situation? We have close friends who bought without knowing the problem. Fast forward 3 years and they are fed up but, can't figure out what to do. Pleas to the neighbor don't help and they admit they are crazy cat people. Does anyone have any ideas?

Are you talking about cat hoarding in the house.... or lots of cats inhabiting the yard?

They actually travel in and out but, the backyard has 5 cat houses. 2 allegedly with heat. They estimate 20-30 living there using the neighborhood as a litter box.

Well, I have to say that even in fresh air 20-30 cats peeing around......would have been a tip off to any prospective home buyer.

Now I LOVE cats, but that is waaaaaaay too many.

Have they not contacted their town/village?

The town or county may have regulations as to how many animals are allowed to live on the property. These rules are for the protection of the animals. Animals living in an over-crowded situation can be at risk for illnesses.

Honestly I would call the town, the SPCA, whoever else they can think of. There is probably some obscure law especially if it's enough of a nuisance to be bugging your friends.

My mom had/has that on her block. May be the same crazy lady. We ended up moving to the end of the same block, got a dog and let him clean house. They no longer sleep under our cars or on our patio furniture. We also had a local shelter catch and release them to prevent the problem that already exists. My mom still has a few sleeping on her property but she said there wasn't much she could have done either. As long as someone is feeding them they won't go anywhere.

Are they spaying and neutering them to stop the reproduction? I would find out. Also contact the local cat rescues (not the big shelters, I mean the little grass roots, non-profits) and see if they can help. The people housing them have good hearts but trap, neuter, release is the only solution to curbing the population. In time, the colony will die off.
It's so sad as the cats are only trying to survive and be cats. Not their fault.

Geez, get the females fixed at least, or else there will be 30+ cats each year with just like 3 females who aren't fixed, and that # will multiply each year. The town of Hempstead shelter does free spaying/neutering to strays.
