One exit west of exit 42. Exit 42 was 5th ave. I forget the one before it. It went up to Hemlock Park Elementary. We spent many hours there. It use to attract big crowds.

We sledded and skated at Belmont Lake State Park. Good times for a kid.

Anybody else remember house and cocktail parties where the grown ups would dress as if they were going out?
My parents were at our annual Christmas cocktail party and they both commented how much like it was their old ones. |

The parkway was down the block, but the exits were too far of a lug. Besides -- my parents woulda KILLED me if they found out I went there to sled!

We had a lot of freedom, but it wasn't "all" harmless fun. We caused a lot of BS, and got in our share of trouble too. ![]() Like stealing dad's gas can for the lawn mower and riding our bikes to sears robuck off of 5th ave. It was for motor cycles, dirt bikes. We set up wooden ramps with old car tires, about 8-9 high. We had both take off and landing ramps. We would set them on fire with the gas and go over the jumps while the take off ramp was 5ft high in flames! Ahh the good old days! ![]() |

Anyone remember the Joan Davis show? I think Jim Bacus was on it.
That was I MARRIED JOAN & I can still remember the theme song. I always like Jim Backus . |

Absolutely. They were great because no one would pay any attention to us kids. We were there to pass around the hors d'oeuvres & then basically just to disappear. They were an excellent study of grown-ups and their strange ways. ![]() |

How true!
![]() My dad was just telling me that they had the cocktail parties for a few reasons; money was tight, the guest were your neighbors and there wasn't many places to go with a group. He did tell me about the time a bunch of couples went to the bar at the Brook Motel as they heard it had dining and dancing (early 60's). Turns out it was sleazy even back then as a couple of hookers were working the room. After a round of drinks they went back to their neighborhood cocktail parties. |

Locally, we would get rides to the Bethpage State Park golf course to sleigh ride and if we headed too far in, would get chased out. |
