I have a few things to say about this fascinating thread.
I was born in the late 70s, and I even yearn for a more innocent time: playing on the street, respecting elders, not being so paranoid about everything.
But I have a few questions:
Is it possible that we are forgetting some of the more regrettable things about this time? What might some of these things be?
If the time period was so wonderful, why didn't the children who grew up during this time pass it on to their children?
Many posters claim that they did wild and whackky unsupervised things as kids and never got hurt. Fair enough. But if they were perfectly safe why don't you let your kids do them? Did we all have too much fun than was wise and now we're looking back with the benefit of having lived?
Two working parents? Because our society demands a HIGHER standard of living?
That being said, I'd love to go back to boys being boys and girls girls, block paries and hanging out, no bicycle helmets and not worrying about everything!

Who is to say that we're not?

Nobody let do wild and wacky things, we just did them and many times when our parents found out we were punished. Same now, I know my kids are doing many of the same things as I did and if I catch them doing it the hammer comes down. All part of growing up.

Many women, like me wife, work because they enjoy it, others because the family needs the money.
If we look there were plenty of bad things about the good old days.

Years ago if I acted up in school my father would get me good. I was to afraid of my dad to even think of acting up or being disrespectful to a teacher or any adult. Look at a kid wrong in school today, tell them they are not following dress code, let a teacher call a parent and tell them how disrepectful their kids are in class, you are waiting for a lawsuit.
Years ago, the teacher took a ruler, one smack on the hand and that was it. Try that today. Things are much different.
Years ago we played outside games, never worrying about abduction. Today a parent cannot leave a child for a minute. The illegal situation was not prevelent. Today, an illegal can kill and get away with it. They are not citizens.
I grew up in the beginning of the drug error and escaped it(too afraid of dad) but it still was not as bad as things are today. And wait until this Presidential election is over, it is going to get much worse,if that's possible.
Life was better years ago.IMO.

In years past we had a handful of tv channels, news and family entertainment type shows. Now, hundreds of channels and just try to sit with your kids to watch a show. Chances are either you or your kid will be embarassed. Let's not even think about what the internet brings.
If your child acted up in the store you would spank them right there and then, today do that and CPS will be called to take your kid away.
As I am going on I believe we are going off topic and might have to start another thread about this topic.

This is supposed to be a gentle look back at the past..
and yet?
We're getting into an area that is not only unnessicary..
it's frightening and depressing.
Can't we move on and talk about the past in a more pleasant
and meaningful light?

Agreed. Talking about the past does bring back great memories . I hope we all feel that way. The television shows were great, playing outdoors after school was great and the summers were the greatest.
Thanks for getting me back on track FCM.
