Default long island rags to riches

Thought of this from the "worst towns on LI" thread, every hamlet/village/city in Nassau & Suffolk counties listed by per capita income, lowest to highest. Remember, these figures are from the 2000 census and are probably pretty close to being out of date at this point. I used per capita income because based on what I learned from reading Wikipedia in the past 5 minutes, it's probably the best indicator of actual "wealth". I'm not an expert on these statistics by any means, if anybody has a good argument for another indicator, I'll redo it based on that. In parentheses is the percentage of the population below the poverty line.

How is it possible that some of the wealthiest areas on Long Island have higher poverty rates than (just for some standard) my working class/middle class neighborhood of North Babylon.

There must be a reason?

Are there lots of poor illegal immigrant workers serving the wealthy? Are they kept as virtual slaves in the homes of those people or marginalized to some hidden corner?

or equally disturbing,

Are the residents of LI's wealthiest communities claiming poverty so they can collect government help and/or falsify their tax returns?

Can some one explain why Hewlett Bay Park is tops for per capita income, but has a 4.8% poverty rate which is higher than many other less wealthy places on LI?

No, it seems that wealthy areas all have crappy areas, typically by the train station.

I don't really like per capita income...correct me if I'm wrong, but if I'm a man/woman making $100K per year, and my spouse is staying home with the kids, then that makes the per capita income $50K? Doesn't give a true "wealth" picture if that the case. Let me know if I'm wrong here.

For those who may not be familiar with Upper Brookville:

Upper Brookville is a village (incorporated in 1932) in the north-central part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the north-central part of Nassau County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Upper Brookville in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Village of Matinecock, the Village of Mill Neck and the Hamlet of Oyster Bay; on the east by the Hamlet of Oyster Bay and the Hamlet of East Norwich; on the south by the Village of Muttontown and the Village of Brookville; and, on the west by the Village of Old Brookville and the Village of Matinecock.

Upper Brookville is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name in their mailing address: places in the Village of Upper Brookville have an "Oyster Bay, NY 11771", "East Norwich, NY 11732" or "Glen Head, NY 11545" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

I think a median income figure would have been better than an averaged out per capita.

I'm in Stony Brook, and we have a number of underpaid University (TA) grad students in the area (as do local towns) which would skew the per capita income. I noticed that Poquott (11733) was not listed within Setauket (11733), but SUNY Stony Brook (11794) was included in Stony Brook (11790) There is on campus apartment housing for grad students. If SUNY SB's 11794 stats were separated from 11790, the figure for 11790 would be more in line with Setauket 11733.

Median household income would be an even better statistic.

My initial reaction to the high percentage of poverty in wealthy areas was the same as nbres...Centre Island is the best example I can think of on that list. Theres no train station or any other kind of housing that is in anything but the "mansion" category to be found, yet 12.5% of the population is living in poverty? Doesn't add up...

I used per capita income because I thought it would more accurately reflect individual earnings, whereas median household income I'm assuming would skew towards areas that have more families/more earners per household. I'm thinking OhBeeHave is right in that I should have gone with a median personal income, but those statistics would have taken longer because they're separated for males and females and I would have combined them..

I'll do another one with another criteria though, let me hear some arguments for median household vs. median personal income vs. median family income

very interesting stats , sean x 4. The Center Island one is a mystery unless they are counting the live-in help . It must be a very small population all in all.
