There are these run down looking check cashing "send money to Guatemala and Mexico" all over now, big signs in Spanish for them. The PW Police Dept also has there hands full with robberies, drugs and assorted nonsense. La Mottas restaurant& boatyard had to put up 12 cameras. A gay Spanish hangout on Main St (Flobets bar) The schools are becoming a real mess, these "new" kids are unstable and have issues if you know what I mean. I was in the Bank of America there on a Friday. This desheveled looking character was holding up the line trying to fill out 40+ money orders to Central America as his friends waited outside hooting at women. He could not communicate with the teller. -Joe |

I have never been a huge fan. The area has lots to do and is a prime location but never understood the prices in the area. I much prefer the Glen Head/Glen Cove (good sections) over Port Washington.

Prices are a direct function of the train for the most part. While most of PW is still quite nice, the downtown area around the train and the area with the affordable housing is the problem...and it fans out, and into the schools sometimes. I would still say it's a good place, but I'm not sure how I would feel about sending my kids to the school...the demograpics are becoming increasingly troublesome.

I live in the Terrace near Daly and when I moved in here 10 years ago most of the people in my immediate area were mid-level professionals like accountants, teachers, detectives and engineers. However since then many of the small capes that these people lived in were bought up and these huge monstrosities on small lots were built in their place. Most of the new residents are doctors, lawyers and other high level professionals. At the same time many poor immigrants have moved into the multi-family homes in parts of the Terrace near Harbor Homes. This has made the neighborhood more polarized in terms of income. Also, there have been some gang related violence over the last few years (shooting on Shadyside and an assault on Pepperday) on streets that you wouldn't suspect would have problems. I'm a mid-level professional and I'm increasingly feeling uncomfortable in Port. It seems like its going simultaneously upscale and ghetto at the same time. Very strange. |

Manorhaven Elementary definately has some troublesome demographics; Daly, Guggenheim and Sousa are ok for now; South Salem has very good demos (but remember there is a Superfund toxic waste site directly behind it). |

You sound like me re the superfund site...that was the reason we personally chose NOT to move to PW's Salem area. I loved that neighborhood, but just didn't feel ok with a landfill practically in my yard or in my child's school's playground.

Look, I'm not crazy about all the illegals in Port either but let's not over do it! For the most part Port is still OK but it does have some worrying trends. |

I agree. Still a very desirable and gorgeous town. Plus it is not small so the areas that are "an issue" are limited and will remain limited. And most people who live there use the schools and the schools are still considered desirable. There are problems in almost every school.

That dam university hospital system was allowed to run amuck ruining the whole town when those TNH Democrats (Newburger, Kaiman, Wink, Pollack" from Great Neck got into office; these people are as nasty and arrogant as they come. The former town atterney Howard Miller is now the administrator for the hospital ....sweet deal huh ?? They make HORRIBLE neighbors and are replacing the father & son Wall streeters. The hospital now has its doctors and a huge pool of cheap labor that is hired through middle-men as a buffer to hide the fact they hire illegels. As a university hospital its exempt from all sorts of taxes Yes a Salvadorian MS13 gang operates up there they hang around the train station lots and layup yards Last edited by Joe L; 12-14-2007 at 02:01 PM. |
