In general Suffolk is less crowed, has lower taxes, and you get more for your money when buying a home. I did this comparison 13 years ago and bought a home in Suffolk. The comute to the city is closer in Nassau by train but it is only one hour to the city from Babylon(Suffolk county) when using the express train.
I would say the North Shore/South Shore difference is MUCH stronger than the Nassau/Suffolk difference.
For example:
- Oceanside has much more in common with Lindenhurst then it has with Kings Point. Freeport and Bay Shore are practically long lost brothers..
And
- Port Jefferson has way more in common with with Port Washington then it does with Mastic.
But of course Nassau is generally more dense, has somewhat higher taxes as well as a slightly older housing stock (on average) since most of it was developed earlier than Suffolk. I find both the south shore and north shore of Nassau to be more snobby than both shores of Suffolk.
Also, I would say that western Suffolk (most of the town of huntington and town of babylon) have more in common with Nassau than the rest of Suffolk
