I just recieved a notice of suspension because I did not pay a speeding ticket from 1998. but...I never actually got this ticket, so I cannot believe I am even getting this in the mail. I called the Hempstead traffic dept, and they told me that the officer handed me this ticket. (ie: not a red light ticket, etc). I asked where I got it,and they told me Brower avenue. They identified the car I was driving at the time to be the correct car. But they had my old address from my driver's license and not the then current address which my vehicle was registered under. Additionally, there was no mention of my maiden name, which would have been on that ticket then. I have lived in NY all my life, so I don't know how this never came up before. I now own my 3rd car, and no one at the DMV or any insurer ever told me I had a speeding ticket on my record. I just don't know what to make of this, and how I can prove that this was not me getting this ticket when I go to court to fight it. Any suggestions?

Are you sure you never got this ticket? Or are you not sure, or thinking you might get out of it on a technicality about your address or maiden name? Do you remember being pulled over? Did you drive on that street in 1998?

Your address on the ticket would likely reflect the address on your driver's license. You say the address wasn't your current address at the time on the registration, but was it the address on the license? Did you receive a copy of the ticket with the suspension notice? If not you should request a copy. If it's filled out with your driver's license number and has your name and address as it was on your 1998 license I don't know how you would explain that one away.

If you are 100% positive you didn't get the ticket you should definitely fight it and you should probably get a lawyer. If you just don't remember or think you can get away with pointing out technicalities about your name and address, well that's your decision.

Your story is nothing.
I received a ticket because one of my "high beams" wasn't working when one night a cop randomly pulled me over in suffolk county. He wanted to "check" everything on my car. So, he issued me a ticket for a non-working headlamp and another one for expired insurance. I admit, I gave him the wrong insurance card by mistake but I wanted to give him the new one when he said "I'm in a hurry. Just mail a copy of your current insurance and fix your headlamp and you should be just fine".
Did all that. 3 months later, I was pulled over because I was doing 45 on a 40mph zone(I was getting off the LIE on exit 40).
He came to me and issued me 2 tickets. One for driving 10 over the speed limit(Even though he initially said I was doing 5 over but I couldn't argue), he issued me another ticket for driving with suspended license(unpaid tickets mentioned above), he wanted to search my car but i said no and my car was towed.

Long story short, I ended up paying over $1000 because even though my proof for fixing the headlamp and having insurance was sent via USPS Registered mail, the DMV never received my letter with information. Furthermore, they never sent me anything regarding those unpaid tickets. It was only after the fact that I had everything solved(on the 4th month) when I received a letter telling me of the unpaid tickets. Getting a lawyer and spending more money would've been just a waste of my time and more money.

DMV will pull this type of thing to get more money and you nor I are or will be the only victims.

Yeah this makes sense. These scumbags tried to block my TX license application for nonexistent tickets from 1996. In 2 of the tickets, the alleged offense couldnt even be identified because the codes were no longer used bu Nassau County. I still had to spend money on a lawyer to get them removed. Its all about revenue.

I think Hempstead court is different than DMV. I got similar experience, got a parking ticket $65 back in 2005. I paid it back then. And all of the sudden, they mailed me a notice after 8 years saying I still owe $60 or something like that. I renewed my license and bought a new car in between. What funny was they said they keep mailing me notice, put me on collection three times. And I got nothing in mail! Anyhow, went to hempstead court, explain to judge, and they let me go.
