Default Can you tell me a bit about Long Island hospitals, especially on the north shore?

We're thinking about moving there soon, mostly because we want to start a family. How do LI hospitals compare to Manhattan ones? Obviously, I'm most interested in the maternity care, but general comments & opinions are welcome as well!!

I Love my gynecologist Dr. Cohen who has offices in Little Neck and Woodbury - He is associated with north shore Long Island jewish located in new hyde park. I gave birth to my first child there and have no complaints. Good luck. Feel free to send me a private message if you want some further info.

Hospitals and medical care are very good in LI. I don't know if any hospital can ever be as wonderful as NY Presbyterian/Cornell, but North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset (and Long Island Jewish) was voted one of the top ten best hopsitals in 2006 by New York magazine.

http://nymag.com/health/besthospitals/24095/index4.html

http://www.northshorelij.com/body.cfm?id=11&oTopID=0
You will see on this link that in almost every category, a LI hospital made the list. You might have to trek into Manhattan to find a top Orthopedist, but other than that, we have most medical services covered here.

Another claim to fame is LI is home to one of only two children's hospitals in NY, Schneider's Children's Hospital. Wonderful hospital!

We also have St. Francis Hospital for Cardiac Care, which is ranked on that list as a best Cardiac Hospital. My grandmother and a friend were patients there, excellent hospital as well. Not to mention gorgeous looking as many of the hospitals have gorgeous grounds and are located in beautiful neighborhoods.

I am a VERY educated person re medical issues, from a patient standpoint and as an employee in the medical field as well. I have found them to be very competent overall. Part of why I moved to LI was b/c of the great medical care. I have some awesome doctors that I feel are very capable.

Also, the abundance of free parking lots when visiting these doctors offices is a huge plus to someone coming from the city who is used to having to deal with the lack of parking when visiting a physician. Part of the reason I never want to leave LI is b/c I love the abundance of medical options/professionals to chose from and the comfort of such excellent medical care.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Lake Success

LIJ is in the Village of Lake Success ("New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address), and is also partly in the NYC Borough of Queens.

For those who may not be familiar with Lake Success:

Lake Success is a village (incorporated in 1927) in the central-west part of the Town of North Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau County/NYC border.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lake Success in the Town of North Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of University Gardens, the Village of Russell Gardens, the Village of Thomaston and the Hamlet of Manhasset; on the east by the Hamlet of Manhasset, the Village of North Hills and the Hamlet of Manhasset Hills; on the south by the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park; and, on the west by New York City (the Nassau County/NYC line).

Lake Success is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name as part of their mailing address: places in the Village of Lake Success have a "Great Neck, NY 11020" or a "New Hyde Park, NY 11040" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

I would not be worried at all, though I think Nassau has the better facilities...LIJ, North Shore, St. Francis, Winthrop, etc. There's a critical mass of good private doctors, too. I'm very pleased with all the options in Nassau. Plus, if need be, you're pretty close to NYC in Nassau (and W. Suffolk).

I think the best in Suffolk may be Stonybrook. There are also a fair number of doctors that have offices in the city and on LI...maybe they live on LI, etc.

Huntington Hosp. is affiliated with North Shore-LIJ.

North Shore Medical Group in Huntington is now a part of Mount Sinai.

I loved the labor & delivery staff at Huntington Hospital!!!! I had a wonderful experience when delivering my daughter (emergency c-section) and I have no worries come March when we have our son.

I've also been to emergency room for a few visits and each time I felt it was very well run.

But as GCGuy stated, there are a number of top rated doctors that have offices both on LI and in the city.

I don’t know about North Shore my mother was having heart palpations after being mugged in Port Washington. These 3 mouseketeers roll this EKG machine into the room and don’t know where to put the electrodes.
They then all start arguing in some Pakistani jumbo moving pads and turning dials. The blank EKG paper roll was spilling on to the floor at this point.

There was no doctor on the floor, I literally blew a fuse and had to be removed by the police who arrived before any doctor or qualified medical technician could be found.

Steer clear of University hospitals !

I don't think one can say that any area's hospitals are better than others.

I think which hospitals are best for what depeneds on the WHAT...
what's ailing you, i.e., recurring ailments, disease, etc.

My Mom was a nurse at Long Island Jewish for many years. Patients are treated well there.

I gave birth to my son at North Shore Hospital 21 years ago.
It was nice enough then.

I have had good experiences at LIJ, St. Catherine's in Smithtown, Stony Brook and Winthrop. There might be more of a density of hospitals and doctors in Nassau versus Suffolk but people sometimes forget you can be in Suffolk but still 20 minutes from your hospital of choice in Nassau (or vice versa). Medical care is not an issue on LI, which is one of the nice things.

I would absolutely commute to Nassau from Suffolk to see my favorite dr or book a procedure at my preferred hopital. I totally agree.
