I qualify for a middle-class STAR rebate on my house. We bought in July, little after the owners paid the tax bill (they didn't qualify for the rebate). However, I only reimbursed them for the taxes. As such, I can't file for the rebate. I can only ask the old owners to file for the rebate and reimburse me for the full cost of the taxes.

Anyone have suggestions or knowledge about this? It's worth more than $500 to me.

Thanks!

I would say unfortunately you may be out of luck as probably the original owners filed for that (unless they left New York and do not even know about it.)

The application comes to the address. The previous owners are probably not even aware of it AND do not qualify as they no longer live in the home and pay the taxes on that home. You don't qualify either as your STAR program doesn't kick in yet until the new year (make sure you get your application in right away or you'll miss the deadline and have to wait another year). There is no way for you to get that money..

So, why can't you file yourself?

She can't apply herself because in order to qualify you have to be already qualified for the Basic star. SHe only purchased the house this past spring/summer (I believe) and her star that she applied for will not kick in till next year (and if they give this rebate next year, she'll be eligible.)
