My transmission in my 2001 Ford Escape XLT 4WD is shot. It goes backward only. Does anyone know a mechanic who could replace a transmission at my house? I do not want to pay to have it towed. I would buy the tranny and the mechanic could replace it. Not sure if it could be done in a driveway.

If Anyone who could connect me to someone would be appreciated.

To do a tranny job at house would be a really tough thing to do. If you're talking about making the investment to replace a transmission, then you really just bite the bullet and pay to have the car towed to a reputable Tranny shop. Pennywise....

You may also find a shop to include the tow.

Just my 2 cents

Most mechanics shy away from installing other peoples parts. No control over quaility and the headaches when there is a bad part aren't worth the hassle. Can it be done in a driveway, yes but it adds to the difficulty of the job. Do you have a source of compressed air? Electric? Having to work without them adds considerable time and difficulty to the job as well. A tow to a shop is less than 100 bucks. Considering the total cost of the job a lot of shops have their own tow trucks or a deal that would allow them to basically throw that in at a considerable discount. I would shy away from this job myself. Too cheap to pay for a tow, probably shopping around for the cheapest used transmission you could find spells trouble.

I already bought a new car. I just hate to junk a car that runs great because of the transmission. I was looking to have it fixed to use as a commute car so I wouldn't have to put 350 miles a week on my new car. So, th truck has very little value to me. I was going to buy a transmission pulled from another Escape and find someone to do it for me. I would think it could be done pin a day and I could give someone $500 or so to do it. I wouldn't mind throwing $1500 total to get it back up and running.

If it is that difficult to do in a driveway, then I will just sell it for $1000. I already have offers to pay that. It could be parted out and make a lot. I got 4 new tires, the engine runs great and the body has no dents. I could get $500 to junk it for scrap metal. Thanks for the responses.

My MIL just got $300 for a 21 year old car that doesn't even run. Good luck!
