The University of North Carolina was chartered in 1789; Duke University in 1836; and NC State in 1899......Research Triangle Park, named in recognition of and strategically located nearly equidistant between those three major research universities, opened in 1959.
I'm pretty sure that all would have happened regardless of late 20th/early 21st century Long Islanders wanting lower taxes and bigger, newer houses flocking here in droves.
Yes! Cold, hard reality from an actual North Carolinian! Thank you!
I don't know where they are from but we have some of the most shellfish people in Union County on the face of the earth. Yes, our taxes were going up slowly but this year the migrants have started with the law suits that is just about to ruin our reasonable schools that are some of the best in the state.
Is it one bad apple or one Big Apple will spoil the whole state?
Please accept my condolences. Paying for all the ridiculous lawsuits will also make you taxes soar. I know as I live in a County that is constantly getting sued and lots of our tax money goes to lawsuit defense and lost lawsuit awards ... and the actual employees who caused us to get sued (trigger or beating happy cops, jailers who have actually killed inmates, etc.) do not have to pay a penny towards the mess they created!
And at least where I am, I don't have to live amongst the scum. All of my neighbors are self-sufficient- i.e. no gov't jobs/unions/entitlements. They're good old-fashioned "get it done" types who take care of their own.
Wow, so none of your neighbors has ever taken advantage of Medicare (where you get more from the government than you pay in), Social Security (ditto), any sort of federal tax deductions, Medicaid or any other sort of federal funding for your region. I guess you and your neighbors also don't drive on any federally funded highways that other Americans have paid for. I guess your neighbors with kids reject the opportunity to use federal child tax credits. They must all be pretty well off to do that. And the kids, wishing to remain "self-sufficient," probably also do not accept any school lunches because, of course, these are federally subsidized as well. In fact, I guess I can assume that you all produce your own food and don't accept any that has been picked or prepared by illegal immigrants earning pennies for long days of hard work. You all must live like the Amish.
The truth is that no one today is "self-sufficient." As mentioned in my previous post, North Carolina profits from federal money, while New York loses. Yours has been a "taker" state for many years, well before the current President took office. And if your state is too "liberal" (another joke), then head down to South Carolina, which tops the nation in the money per dollar that it sucks from the rest of us. In fact, most of the southern states have been a burden to federal taxpayers since the end of the Civil War. What's ironic is that, in these "taker" states, you can't go 10 feet without hearing someone complain about federal government "intrusion."
If you turned off Fox News for a while and delved into your neighbors' situations, I think you'd be surprised to learn that most of them are feeding at the federal trough in one way or another.
So, to sum up, NY = 20% less than we give to the federal government. NC = 34% more. From up here, it looks like all of North Carolina is on welfare.
The fact is, with our [the whole country's] population of nit-wits, who voted not once, but TWICE for a Marxist president, the whole country is turning into one big government-dependent welfare slum. The almighty gov't says that if someone makes less so-much, they are "entitled" to foodstamps and medicaid and all that garbage....so naturally, most people avail themselves of the opportunity to "gimme!"- and since incomes are generally quite low in the South, it wouldn't surprise me if what you say is true- although I would not use NC as an example- as NC, for all intents and purposes is essentially a northern liberal state now.
And at least where I am, I don't have to live amongst the scum. All of my neighbors are self-sufficient- i.e. no gov't jobs/unions/entitlements. They're good old-fashioned "get it done" types who take care of their own. When the economy fully collapses, we'll be just fine.
Meanwhile, here, you don't see empty shopping centers and abandoned gas stations and foreclosed homes, because we still have a locally-based agricultural economy. In the town where I shop, the population is only 12K people- and yet there must be 20 banks in that town! I have never seen so many banks in one small town.
It isn't a north vs. south thing, either- it's a city thing. I'm sure there's as much welfarism in New Orleans as in New York- maybe even more. Anywhere you have these cities- whether it's Memphis; Atlanta or Buffalo or Deroit, you have a large population who are essentially helpless; and they are enabled by a rogue political system which makes it possible for them to procreate prolifically and live their entire lives never having to worry about making a living or practicing birth-control.
And actually, NY can not even support itself. Remove Federal funding from NY, and the subways and LIRR wouldn't even run! I'll never ride one of those trains again- and my neighbors have never been on one of those trains in their lives, and yet we subsidize them. Ditto the federal funds that build and subsidize 80% of the cost of a housing project in Manhattan, so indigents can live in some of the most expensive real estate in the country! If you stopped the Federal funding that NY has become so reliant on, NY would fold literally overnight.
New York gives more Federal dollars than it receives-period.
No, you've got it wrong. Your so-called "nanny-states" are mostly in the South, where residents seem to need constant help from the Federal Government to keep things running (the same government that many of you like to complain about). For example, for every dollar North Carolinians send to Washington, they get $1.34 back. Here in NY, it's 79 cents. So all of us here up North, including people of all races and colors who some of you Southerners love to hate, spend a good part of their tax dollars to support you and your fellow "takers." Remove that New York money and then see what your taxes would look like.
Oh, and have a nice time in South America.
Funny, according to this New York is 4th on the list for receiving Federal Grants @$3000 per person
( Federal Funds Information for States ) versus North Carolina @$1600 per person.
So I guess sooner or later everyone has their hand in the cookie jar...
Yes! Cold, hard reality from an actual North Carolinian! Thank you!
he pretty much posted the opposite of your usual battle cry ("NYers only make it in NC because of their awesome work ethic and take no prisoners attitude! NYers go there and take the place by storm and show them how it's done!") and now you agree with his sentiment? Glad you've come around
At least a good percentage of the people down here still have some basic morality; manners; and a drive to preserve their own as well as their neighbor's freedom. Unlike that jungle of money-grubbing morally-blind cretins up there, who would sell their own child's future for a cup of Starbucks.
The South will survive when the North is in ashes. Only 12K people in the town where I shop- and not one empty store. In fact, they're building more and opening new businesses all the time- they're even building a Marriott- in a town of 12K people..... People still have a work-ethic here; and the local government doesn't take everything we make, or regulate us into oblivion. Meanwhile, on Lawn Guyland, there are bums on every street corner, and some of the shopping centers that were empty 20 years ago, are still empty......and some that weren't empty, are now!
NYers are so used to disfunction, that it looks normal to them. And what is normal, looks radical.
Your car breaks down on the road here? Instead of worrying about being robbed, the first car that comes along will stop and offer assistance. (and several others behind it!). My neighbor is 39 years old and has never tasted alcohol. If those are bad things, then I guess I must be perverse to enjoy suffering them, as opposed to the high-society of enlightened philanthropists one encounters in NY....
This thread is starting to sound like the North vs. the South! Are we headed for another Civil War here folks?
In REALITY, there are good and bad people all over this country and in spite of some of the opinions on this thread, they did not all come from NY! Americans have moved across our states for centuries, so for any of you to imply that Southerners are wholly southern, or "native" is kind of laughable. At some point in time, someone in their family probably came from up north.
Change comes to all areas, even the South. Change can be good, it's called "progress". Perhaps instead of fighting it, some of our southern neighbors should embrace change that is brought to them from up north, it might be good for them! And honestly, a few northerners who've relocated aren't going to make change happen down south without the cooperation of those southerners.
Sounds to me like some of you would rather live up on a deserted mountain like a hermit!
