So basically, what you're telling us is that you're about to have a material change in circumstances that affects your ability to buy a home, so the vast majority of your "research" is now based on something that isn't true about you anymore - which is precisely what you were told would happen by everyone, and which is exactly the reason you've been repeatedly told to stop wasting everyone's time on what may or may not happen in your life in late 2016.

81K a year BEFORE taxes is still gonna make it tough to hold a mortgage, pay taxes and insurance, pay electric, heat, cable, water, etc.... maintain the property, eat, clothe yourselves, put gas in the car, pay auto insurance, etc....
Its doable...have to closely watch your expenses on a monthly basis. There will be no savings...the first year will be more difficult until tax return. But even that will go into monthly expenses and if anything comes up such as a water heater, pipe burst or boiler could cause a major money issue. Definitely would recommend having a credit card balance available just in case.
There are people out there I know who can't live below 7 figures.
It all depends on spending habits. $400k will go a lot further if you are eating ramen as opposed to steak, and doing staycations instead of vacations.
Anyone who cant live on an income like that must have some crazy spending habits!
You know what's funny? Someone in the NYC forum asked if 400k/yr is a livable wage. And they weren't kidding.
Wasn't he from the UK?
Yeah, I wasn't very nice. I told him that he needed to apply for food stamps.
