I think the original poster wasn't thinking of the townships when he said best town. To state the original question as what is the best city/hamlet/village on Long Island sounds a little silly. Town would be what most people call them anyway, regardless of whether it's correct or not.

Why not Hempstead?
The Town of Hempstead is one of the 3 towns in Nassau County, and the Town of Hempstead has a larger population (763,822 as per the January 1, 2006 LIPA estimate) than many cities, let alone townships, and includes all or parts of 22 villages (municipal corporations) and 36 hamlets (unincorporated areas).
Many of the villages and hamlets in the Town of Hempstead are considered to be quite nice communities in which to live.

Referring to a 'town' as a 'township' is not silly?
There are no townships on LI because LI is part of New York State and there are no townships in New York State. (If there were townships, and not towns, then there would not be villages, and New York State is one of the few states that allow for the incorporation of villages.)
And, on a forum that supposedly is a place to discuss real estate related issues, shouldn't the idea be that things should be presented correctly so that those who participate in this forum learn things that are correct?

Thank you, that's exactly what I meant...99% of the people on LI refer to their neighborhood as a town. While it may not legally be correct, colloquially it is.

Except for the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, each of the other 2 towns in Nassau County and 10 towns in Suffolk County has either a village or hamlet that has the same name as the town that it is in. That's why it's so important to use the correct language and call towns, towns, and refrain from calling villages and hamlets, towns. (When villages and hamlets are called towns, this leads to an additional error of then having to call towns, townships.)

We all know what GCguy meant, regardless of the terminology. Don't ruin this thread by having a discussion about proper terminology. I don't give a crap if it is a town, township, hamlet, village, etc.
Let's get to the point please. What is the best TOWN and why?
GC, East Williston, Manhasset, Massapequa, get the idea?
Sheesh
