Because any more and it won't make you any happier, according to:

The Income Level At Which Money Won't Make You Any Happier

Only DC and Hawaii would require more.

I believe it. My wife and I are under the 100K and are doing fine. At times it may be hard with a family but you do what you can. At one point I was making enough to put us well over the 100K mark and the stress that came with the position wasnt worth it so I walked away. It all depends on where you want to live and what kind of lifestyle you live but under 100K is more than possible to live in NY with.

I believe this.

Bigger income makes many people accustomed to having "better" things. Then on top of it all you are worried about replacing a huge salary if you lose the currrent one. I say this is fairly accurate.
