UPDATE: Even though speaking to the EPA and DOH was informative. I kept thinking about the soil and air quality. My gut was telling me something....so we pulled out of the contract and only lost 1/2 of our down payment. Don't misunderstand me it is still money however, I would do it all over again just for some piece of mind. I was so sick to my stomach knowing what I know about the toxic plume and the superfund sites. We are now closing on a house further north and I feel so much better. What will be, will be. There is a fate for all of us but, I would like to think I followed my gut and made the right decision for my family. I am super happy about where we are going to live! Thank you all again for all your opinions and information!
You made the right decision. Bethpage is a wonderful town and the school district is AAA+ compare to the property tax paid. My gut told me the same and now I'm paying more taxes for a lesser SD. LOL...
Some people tell you not to buy near the plume. Millions of others in the country would say you are crazy to buy a house ANYWHERE on Long Island because of its elevated cancer rates in comparison with the rest of the country.
I am afraid you will never really know what the right decision is. If you give up the house, you will lose money. If you drive by in 40 years and still see the same family there, you will be kicking yourself. However, if you buy it and someone in your family gets cancer over the years, you will blame yourself.
My mom died of cancer here on Long Island and she did not live near the plume, so, someone in your family could get cancer whether you move there or not. Just something to think about.
