I hope those of you that are thinking about leaving NC do so. Dont wait. What you are feeling (not liking NC) about the south is real.
Do not wait. You will never become one of them. They will never accept you. The grass is not greener in North Carolina.
Why would you want to become anyone then who you already are and who cares who accepts you and who don't there are people all over that aren't going to accept you including right in your own town. You are living for you not everyone else!!

How about upstate NY with it's many economically depressed areas? Just a few short hours from NYC you will find these areas.

I guess it is the slim thread some have to hold on to. Whatever.
Sorry to be short, but there's just so many crazy posts here that sometimes I just don't get it.

Sorry to hear about your friend. That's never good. F that guy, ditch his ass, and when she gets the settlement, she can take the freakin' Escalade with her, no?

Anyway, back to the topic...move back from NC while you still can. Soon, they'll be nobody living there b/c it's too crowded.

Yeah that's probably the only area I would ever think of living in, if I could afford it and if I could ever drive in or shovel snow again.

How long ago? I've been paying for housing on Long Island since the late 80's and it hasn't been reasonable during that entire time. True, house prices made sense about ten years ago but everything else was already ridiculously high.

As for the "issues" in North Carolina, every area has it's challenges. Many of the houses we looked at before buying (including the one I bought) have private wells for water. Overcrowding in the schools (another popular panic topic) is mostly found in the areas where brand new developments are going up. In the more stable areas (e.g. North Raleigh ) the school zonings don't change very often.

Long Island living is about surviving; no amount of legislation or planning will change things for at least a full generation, if at all. North Carolina's problems pale in comparison.

I suppose that is true to an extent. Ultimately you have to be happy with yourself. However I can sympathize with the poster. I am originally from Michigan. I lived in the Tenn for 5 and NC for 12 years. Even after all that time I was still a Yankee. Especially in Eastern NC, they blame Yankees for everything from bed bugs to global warming. I actually heard a guy say after the big tobacco settlement that he believed them "Yankees wanted to kill all Southerners". I was once told by a guy that he hated Duke because their coach was a northerner and a Yankee.
I just got tired of hearing that kind of stupidity all the time.

good..i hope you enjoy "the triangle" while you can. It is a nice place...it's just extremely overrated and headed down the same path as every other "it" place of the past. To believe otherwise is really naive. Not stupid, because that is what everyone would like to believe and seems reasonable and ideal...but it is naive.

I have a brother that would eat his hat before he'd admit he's sorry he left NY.....he's an Sept 2006 immigrant of the Triangle and already he's telling me 1) the groceries are higher than upstate NY 2) the gas is as high if not higher and 3) he gave up a beautiful colonial with property which he sold for 220,000 and the same size house/lot would sell for 700,000 in Raleigh...the slow realization he'll never own a home again was a shock as the hype is how much cheaper it is to live in NC...His boss tells him (contruction) not to talk in certain stores because they are not fond of Yankees and the traffic he hears and sees from his apt is non-stop 24/7...not exactly utopia for me.....oh he likes the weather although he has not lived through a summer yet...we'll see what he says in August
