The new NY State teacher evaluations for Long Island are out.

It's very interesting as it really mixes up the list of the normal school rankings.

I would not look for any consistency with any other lists. AS a matter of fact, read it for the humor.

What a farce. These numbers are MEANINGLESS!! Look at the disparity from school district to school district between Highly effective and effective. The principals doing the evaluations vary in judgement when doing evaluations. These ratings are all opinion and contain no facts to how effective a teacher is. What a waste of time and tax dollars!!!

It certainly looks like a bit of a joke and a big waste of taxpayer money. From what I can gather on what data is used, 40% are based off of test scores, and 60% are from evaluations from principals, superintendents from within that district. So if you have a district giving out blanket "highly effective" scores to their teachers, that has a 60% weighting and will skew any districts' outcome. Plus all data for each teacher is confidential so we don't know who the good and poor teachers are.

Yeah, I know these evaluations well as I have to hear about them all the time.

They have little value and are a waste of taxpayer money.

And why should teachers be exempt from evaluation? Show me a job where the quality of your evaluation is not based on the opinion & literary skills of the reviewer? Also realize that some districts may have more older/younger teachers that skew the reviews.

If you thought the NYS Education Department's new teacher evalutions would be an expensive and foolish enterprise...you were right.

Doesn't that mean a good district with a poor rating say the teachers are really bad?

Garden City, Plainview, Harborfields, Port Washington, Half Hollow Hills.
