My new hubby and I are looking for places to buy a home. We want honest opinions on both of these areas. Which is better?
We like both areas but I found Babylon to be prettier, more diverse and fun than Massapequa. It's very story bookish (if that's even a word). However, Massapequa has the mall which is a plus for me since I can be a bit of a shopaholic! Massapequa is a bit closer to the city but we are are worried about paying Nassau County taxes too.
Our budget is $500k.
We don't have any kids but as long as the public schools are adequate enough where we can use them then we will be ok.
My hubby and I are both in our early 30's and from Medford which is kinda bland. We, re looking for a change.

For what it's worth, from Babylon you are only a short drive from the Tanger outlets. And you get a prettier downtown with express train service to Manhattan.
Agree with the others - I think you'll enjoy Babylon a lot more than Massapequa, especially as a couple with no kids. Most of my late 20s/early 30s no kids crowd prefers to socialize in Babylon and Huntington over other areas. (Patchogue too, at least among my East End friends, but that's probably an area you're already familiar with, being from Medford.)
Also, I think you'll get a lot more house for your money at that price point in Babylon.
I live between Babylon and Massapequa and I would choose Babylon for many reasons.
As for the mall, I personally like the Massapequa Mall. It's pretty large and there's a wide variety of stores:
- Preppy/Teen type stores like Abercrombie, Hollister, Eagle, Zumiez, Hot Topic, Aero and Pacific Sunwear.
- Some small Urban/Ghetto type clothing stores.
- Bix Box's like JCPenney, Macy's, Sears and Walmart.
- Express, H&M, Forever 21, Gap and all of the other stores you'd expect in a mall.
But a lot of food places have closed in the Food Court which is unfortunate.
And i've been going there for almost all of my life and never have experienced or even witnessed a crime.
Both great towns can't go wrong either way. Go with what your gut tells you if you like babylon more. As for the mall, skip it and go 20 min to Roosevelt field.
Massapequa is nice, but IMHO no comparison to Babylon Village. I lived there for 15 years, and it just keeps getting better!
And for shopping, as has been mentioned, you have the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
Spend some time in each area to get a feel for the vibe (weekends and weekdays, if possible) and see which appeals more to YOU
