i am not clear on whether the bill passed or not? my sympathy on the loss of your dog. people who don't want to buy puppy mill dogs should go to petfinder.com for shelter dogs, or a rescue group.

Those Breeders
While I can appreciate your push to ensure that pet breeders do better, I am deeply bothered by those who want everyone else to adopt from dog shelters while they get to breed ever more expensive pets. I have encountered some of these people at dog runs--everyone else should get, in effect, a "used dog" while they should be able to make money and determine who is qualified to own a dog. I know your story and know you are sincere but think there is more than a little self-interest involved when it comes to some breeders.
And I say "used dog" because I adopted a terrier from a shelter last year who turned out to be vicious and pretty much crazy, to the point where I had to take him back after 10 days. I couldn't stand it.

There are also breed rescues...I just adopted a six year old Yorkie/Silky terrier female from Yorkie rescue. Breed rescues place a dog in a foster home and evaluate the dog, placing it in the best possible home.
Violet is a former puppy mill dog used for breeding. If people who bought their puppies from pet shops ever wondered why they shouldn't buy their dogs there, they should meet my poor Violet: terrified of everything, all of her teeth had to be pulled when she underwent her spay surgery because they were in such poor condition, not trained and still getting over six years of hell. This is where those $2000 puppies came from and she didn't even get basic medical care, other than required vaccinations. Very, very sad. And every puppy bought at a pet store perpetuates this horror.
Many pet shops say that THEIR dogs aren't from puppy mills. I've been involved in dog rescue too long to believe THAT lie. They're ALL from puppy mills.

I understand what you're saying and agree--stores or breeders who are responsiible for this behavior should be shut down. But why shouldn't I be allowed to breed my dog, who is healthy, happy and extremely popular with a number of our friends, who want to adopt her pups if we breed her? Why should that be anyone else's concern? Shouldn't I be allowed to do that instead of having someone who is already making money on breeding telling me that I can't but should go get a less-purebred from the shelter? Or buy an exceedingly expensive dog from them? I have to say that there's a tremendously elitist tone coming from some rescuers, including those who insist that they own the dogs for life.

I'm sorry for your loss. I jsut put 2 dogs to sleep over the past 1 1/2 years, both bought from the same popular pet store in Huntington. One passed away of cancer at age 10, the other liver disease at age 7. It was so sad for my entire family. Unfotunately, I have a 3rd dog from that same pet store, I bought her in the 3 month span between the first ones death and the second one starting to get sick. I hope she is from a different place-breeder,not mill. We just got a puppy from a rescue-she is afraind of people at times, but is so sweet and delicious-she's sleeping in bed right next to me. I'll never buy from a pet store again.

I am not pushing that Only Go To Shelters Agenda. What I am saying is there are reputable breeders out there in addition to the poor shelter animals. Do your research, wait for a litter from a good breeder, do not impulse buy because you think you are saving these pups. If all these pet stores closed tomorrow the mills will be out of business and the pets would find homes.
