I've had the same arguments all along because that's what I actually subscribe to, and you could say that's based on speculation because it IS common sense that people need to SLOW on yellow rather than run through.
Also, this is not "common sense" at all. According to the NYVTL, "[v]ehicular traffic facing a steady circular yellow indication is thereby warned that the related green movement or the flashing arrow movement is being terminated or that a steady red signal indication will be displayed immediately thereafter..."
The yellow light is a warning that a red light is upcoming and a driver then must decide whether he or she will come to a complete stop prior to the intersection or will have sufficient time to enter the intersection prior to the red light. Based on speed, distance to the light, and any other factors (such as weather or nearby cars), the driver must decide whether to continue or to bring the car to a stop. There is no circumstance that a solid yellow light means "slow". It is simply a warning which should prompt the driver to either continue (or accelerate within the speed limit) or stop.
^ yes the same must-make-go-no-go-decision-when-I-see-yellow that has been causing an increase in rear-enders. Time to do the smart thing don't you think?
Unless you're nearly underneath the light, slowTF down in every case. If everyone does that, there will be no question the guy ahead of you WILL NOT go through. It all starts with not speeding up toward intersections. Unfortunately not everyone has the common sense that it is more dangerous to speed toward a car that can potentially stop. Idiots.

Yeah most people see the yellow and speed up to get through the light even if it isn't a "fresh" yellow (meaning even if they did not see it turn yellow and don't know how long it's been yellow).
