I LOVE Huntington, but I'd rather drive a half hour twice a week for my Starbucks & bookstore fix than spend (at least!) five hours a week more of my life commuting to work for the privilege.
It all boils down to personal choice.
When I retire and have nothing but free time to windowshop then I'll retire to Huntington or Baiting Hollow or Montauk or wherever.

Just a little update - in the long run I went with HUNTINGTON. I was in love with a particular house in Merrick but the seller was asking an unrealistically high price given a considerably dropping market, and there was nothing else in Merrick I liked as much, so I went with everyone's advice here and wound up in Huntington/Lloyd Harbor - better house, superb location. Love the neighborhood, well worth an added 20 minutes on the train! For the right house would I have moved elsewhere? Yes. Did I find it? No, and in retrospect I'm glad I didn't. No misinformation on this board

The north shore house is on Barre Place (cross street is Stowe), one block north of (and facing!) Jericho Turnpike near DSW.
The south shore house is near the Merrick train station midblock between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road.
We're willing to pay to $600K with $10K taxes but even in this market are having problems finding a renovated ranch with central air on a minimal quarter acre lot.

You wouldn't have a problem in Huntington and Merrick, but finding a home with quarter acre lot could be a challenge, you might be able to find something in the Lindenmere or Woods sections of Merrick, because they have large lots, but fitting in that price might be hard. Huntington has a stronger gay/lesbian community and they have bigger lots, so you should look into Huntington more.

For those who may not be familiar with Lloyd Harbor

Mazel tov on your new house.
From your brief description, I'm guessing that your new house is in the Village of Lloyd Harbor ("Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address), and not in the Hamlet of Huntington (colloquially referred to as "Huntington Village).
For those who may not be familiar with Lloyd Harbor:
Lloyd Harbor is a village (incorporated in 1923) in the northwest part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Lloyd Harbor in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by Huntington Bay; on the south by the Hamlet of Huntington and the Hamlet of Cold Spring Harbor; and, on the west by Oyster Bay.
Lloyd Harbor is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the village name as part of their mailing address: places in the Village of Lloyd Harbor have a "Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724" and "Huntington, NY 11743" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
