I can't wait to see what happens in another 5 years when they have to build more schools, roads, etc. More traffic..boy, it'll be like LI in no time. There are a number of places in the country that are already straining under growth from NE transplants. It's just the way it is, I suppose. Even the Poconos are having issues with traffic, etc...prices have gone up in a lot of areas, too...

When did you buy your house. My wife and I brought a house in 2002. She had alot of credit card debit which we rolled into the morgage. Which shot up the morgage obvious. Then our taxes double in 2005 and had a child in 2006. So we had no choice but for both of us to work. We both make 70 and 75 a year. And brought a house with debit rolled in for 475,000 in 2002 and we are just making it.

If you think the taxes will be equal to LI's then give me what your smoking. It will never happen. More people doesnt constitute higher taxes. They just have New Yorkers believing that.
As more people move in the more tax dollars generated. Simple right? That is till you the sticky fingererd politicians, administrators, etc. involved. Thats why they are so high here. Suozzi needs that 40% pay raise right? Hey, I pay them too!

In the area of North Carolina we live in (Wake County) we are constantly opening new schools and some schools have a year round schedule (which we love). Kids go to school 9 weeks and are off 3 weeks continued thoughout the year. July starts the new school year. We pretty much track out 3 weeks for every season. Makes family trips sooo much easier and less crowded with people. We do get some traffic, but I laugh when locals call it traffic, NC is alot bigger than LI. I don't think the taxes will ever be as high as LI. Example: our old home in Commack was 52 years old 1700 sq feet , 3 bd 1.5 bath on .16 of land and our taxes were 6000.00 5 years ago. We now have a 5 year old (bought new) 3400 sq foot, brick custom home, 5 bed, 3 bath on .40 of land and our taxes are 3800.00. We also spent $30,000 less for our home in NC than what we sold our house in Commack for. My same house in Commack would be about 170,000 in NC.

I live on one salary, and live in a $400,000 house. My salary is about $65,000, which isn't very good for the area. If I go one more year like this, I know we will be bankrupt unless I tap my retirement. Luckily, the plan is for my wife to go back to work in the fall.

No, more KIDS means higher taxes. As LIers come to NC and clamor for what they left behind (school activities, garbage pick up 5 days a week etc) add to it the cost of new infrastructure, taxes in NC will become more significant, especially compared to the lower salary structure. Ask native born NC people what THEY think of the influx and how it has changed their ability to continue to afford to live in their area.

I agree that the influx of people from an area like LI giong to NC IS hurting the natives there because there taxes are rising as the new residents try hard to make NC like LI as far as some of it's "perks". I for one do not plan on moving somewhere and having demand that my garbage be picked up the same as it is here.... and I think it's unfair that people try to go to a place for a change, then try to change the place to make it like the one they left.

and just so you know.. garbage pick up is usually 3 days a week for each house, not 5 .. atleast in my town.. (not that it is really relevant..LOL). As for school sports , etc.. other schools have it too. My mom lives in a VERY small town in Montana.. a little too slow for me.. but a beautiful little town that is strong as well with all kind of sports team. As a matter of fact, the sports in that town are a BIG deal..think hoosiers..where the town drives sometimes 500 miles across the state to watch the games. When I was there to visit this little town made the state championship and it was an 8 hour drive.. about 75% of the population of the town (which is approx 700) was at the game.. now THAT is cool.. Oh.. and their property taxes are 600/year about. Yeah.. that is not realistic for even a PA or MD or NC cause that's really low.. but the point is the NC schools I'm sure have great sports programs and all those things just as well. I don't see what LI schools have that is so much better, and bigger than other schools in teh nation that justify the high taxes for it.

I agree, more people & more STUDENTS means higher taxes. Take a look at West Palm Beach Florida. My BIL is now paying 14,000 in property taxes in a gated community & the wellington school district is supposed to best "one of the best" in FL. When I was there & went to pick my niece up from middle school I felt like I made a wrong turn into a bad neighborhood.

Florida is paying the price for their population boom of people with children, places like N.C. will feel it too. I'm not saying that it will ever be like LI.

Other places in the country take school sports VERY seriously, its a major source of entertainment in some areas.
