We live in Suffolk County. We are looking for a destination for a 3 day weekend getaway. We are thinking of a mountainous area, something different from the scenery we are used to in Nassau/Suffolk. It's my wife and 9 month old baby so we wouldn't be doing much outdoors; skiing, etc. I lived in the Pocono's for a few years so we would prefer somewhere different. Within 2 to 4 hour drive would probably only leave us upstate NY, right? We are thinking maybe somewhere with a nice, quaint little town and a bed & breakfast.
Consider Lake George (about a five hour drive). While mainly a Summer destination, they also try to have some fun things going on the winter to keep people coming. (We once saw a hilarious "Out House Race" on the frozen lake. Plus, many of the hotels discount their rates this time of year.
You said you don't want the Poconos. But if you go a little farther North to the Lake Wallenpaupak area (Honesdale, Hawley) you will find it has a much different feel.

Cant you take a ferry from Port Jeff or Orient and be in New England in 2 hours?
