If adults want to gamble with their own money let them gamble. Theres already horse racing, lotto so its not like slots will all of a sudden fuel a huge gambling boom. My only problem is this bill doesnt go far enough, Legalize everything, table games, poker, sports etc... Why should that money go to other states or criminal groups and force people to travel 3,4 hours if they want to play poker for the evening. Maybe a casino isnt the best way to help long island grow, but SOMETHING needs to be done. The status quo is not sustainable. By the logic of a casino hurting people, close down all the Mcdonalds and Burger Kings because some people might not be able to handle having fast food so readily available. The Nimbyism on long island makes me sick.
It's ok if they want to build a world class casino. But that location just not the ideal one. How does OCR handle "world class gambler"? Have you tried getting off from meadowbrook to OCR or the mall on weekend? It takes like more than 20 mins just to get off the exit. The casino plan supposed to build casino in distress area. That area already saturated. It's ok if we have another department store. It draws the same type of people into the area anyway. But now, it's a different game and we add on a whole different category of "visitors" into the area.
Sorry to disappoint but these places hire their own people - not locals - because of bonding issues and the only jobs that might be filled by legal residents are akin to soda jerk - at minimum wage you might be able to hop the bus on OCR and ride back home to Queens but it is isn't keeping your mortgage paid. Do you have young kids you're trying to raise? Doubtful. The type of people schlumping into these gambling facilities are not the same type of people buying $1000 necklaces at Fortunoff type stores. Get it? Bums on the street - smoking their dope - dealing their drugs - loan sharks cutting their deals & sending their enforcers out - bums looking to rob a home or a bike or break into a car for something to hock for a few extra gambling dollars or to pay off the loan sharks they own. So yes exactly what happened to the run down beat up crime ridden streets of jersey will find its way through the residential section of nassau - until the good people move out leaving crack dens behind. Tom Suozzi's - let's have a Zoo is sounding better and better every day.
I didn't even bother reply Amisi post. It's pointless and brainless.

It doesn't even come close to 20 minutes during the Christmas rush, so stop your over-reaction/exaggerating.
And stuff like this will become more commonplace if the casino is opened. Seems the bums & degenerates are already gathering, there were a bunch begging for money to get tickets at the Westbury LIRR station this afternoon. Woman Robbed At Costco
I really hope area officials use this casino issue to address all the other problems already in this area. Crime is becoming a problem no surprise with all the illegal housing already present in the area, the casino will only bring more of this element here. Last week there were guys playing soccer, drinking, and smoking weed in the lot by the Westbury train station. If the casino opens, this activity will spread west to Carle Place, you can BET on that. I will be calling my elected officials again, already signed the petition but more needs to be done. It is already a slippery slope and the longer they keep trying to shove this casino down our throats the more frightened people will become and more will leave and you know what takes their place. And the same vagrants that hang around Westbury will be gambling there, they already throw scratch-offs everywhere, and OTB wants to bring in these type of people who play lotto.
And of course I'm sure it will have a bar where they can get drunk too. I've already heard OTB may even consider "dancers". This is a tipping point for the area. If the casino is stopped we have half a chance, but if it's opened, this area is going to fall and fast. All those smaller homes across from the site will become illegal rentals in no time!

This say's it all, short and sweet. If we must have a casino, put it where it's not adjacent to residential areas. They do exist. What's stated below can be backed up with actual surveys.
WE must stop the development of a casino at Fortunoff! The nearby residential areas adjacent to the site are stable middle/upper class communities that would be destabilized by the introduction of a gaming operation. A casino would significantly DECREASE property values, increase CRIME and most certainly create an abundance of TRAFFIC on an already VERY crowded Old Country Road. Most importantly the residents in the surrounding communities are concerned for the satefy of our children who go to school less than a mile away in various school districts.
We are asking the officials who have the power to stop the casino at Fortunoff to abandon the site and find a more suitable location for this establishment.

Holy crap, I was there at Costco about an hour before that. Maybe less.
I have never been paranoid about such things, and this makes me realise that I ought to be far more cautious than I have been since it is second nature for me to even leave my bag sometimes in the cart while I walk over to the driver's door to unlock. Dumb, come to think of it.

There are no residential areas adjacent to the site. There may be some in the general area but all adjacent properties are commercial in nature.
I went to the Source Mall a couple years ago and felt like I was in another country, namely North Korea. It was like some sort of movie set - it looked like a mall but not quite, as most of the storefronts were abandoned and there was barely anyone there aside from us (and the dozens of birds that were weirdly inhabiting the food court).
Add another empty storefront. Just got an e-mail from Golf Galaxy that its location at The Source is closing next weekend.
This does not look promising with even Mangano and others coming out against the proposal, I don't see this happening in Nassau County
Ha. Mangano "against" it but he's got his fingers crossed behind his back. He needs the dough, by any means necessary but it's political suicide to come out for it. Let's not forget, the OTB board members who have carte blanche to pick locations are Repub machine appointees which means the Nassau and TOH repubs have no plans to put up much of a fight. Nimby outcry should kill it, like it does everything else. I'm not for the video crack parlor at all, but I'm just as much against the usual "nimby outcry" that bludgeons any attempts at growth or change. On this one even a broken nimby clock is right twice a day.
