I may or may not have gotten very drunk on many occasions at the Park Bench... maybe...

OP, I think you need to visit the SBU campus (it doesn't sound like you have yet) and take a drive around the surrounding areas and see things for yourself. Nothing in the posts you linked to specifically state "Stony Brook" (or its university) are in any form of decline. There are general questions about the future of LI as a whole and its opportunities/affordability/likability for the upcoming generation (read: millennials), which I think have some validity, but if you're just looking to go to a good school and get a solid education relatively inexpensively, I don't see why any of this is of concern to you.

If you want an "up and coming" area, maybe you should start looking at schools in North Carolina

Duke is at the forefront of accommodating students.

Stony Brook is in the middle of suburbia, but not in the middle of nowhere. You have a premier move theatre and downtown Port Jeff within a 5 minute drive of you. I would definitely bring a car with you.

And like others have said, you're a 1 hour train ride from NYC if you're really bored on the weekends. The train station is on campus

There are numerous ways to get around this if you get creative.

1. Live off campus
2. Buy a Stadium parking pass for during the day, and move your car to almost anywhere else at night. There are parking areas that are open to anyone after certain hours ( I believe 4PM?)
3. Leave your car in one of the residential neighborhoods near South P. When you need to get to it, just take the bus to South P and walk to it.
4. Try to room with a junior/senior/friend that has a car

Option 3 is a huge PITA but I had several friends that did this with no problems. Not the greatest option but I would do this before living at SBU without a car

There are a fair number of residential students who do walk around the community. Granted, having access to a car makes makes errands faster and easier as well as gives you better access to off campus recreation. Given the drinking (and as of Jan 1 smoking) age is 21, it does limit what students can do off campus after hours.
