I personally think plowing major cash into a house causing tax spikes is a fool's move. The taxes have made LI a place that few people can manage unless they're continuously earning a high salary. The taxman is always looking for an opening to stick it to you, and they tax the most ridiculous things, like paving on a patio. I'd just maintain the house and keep the enhancements to a bare minimum. Earlier generations had lower expectations and were happy enough living with less. I knew some families that raised 5 kids in 3 bedroom house with one bathroom.

Enjoy upgrades and a better house in a different place with a government that's less greedy. Construction people won't like what I'm saying, but that's my opinion.
