GC concerns me in that for the type of house I'd want it would be too old and need too much work, and it might be bordering on a sketchy area. RVC I haven't looked into yet. Any areas I should focus on?? The victorian homes sound lovely. What area are they in?? Thanks you guys...you are wonderful!! If the job goes through with hubby I'll be out in the next month or so to house hunt.

Northport is quite nice...more "rural" than, say GC and RVC. No sidewalks or streetlights, etc. I persinally liked the area close to Main St...gorgeous old, Victorian type houses, near the nice downtown, close to the water. Maybe can get 1/2 acre, too. Nice choice, but it is a trip up North...

I would stay in my house in Stony Brook. I'm happy here, but it is a haul to Garden City.
A few folks have mentioned Northport and I believe GC brought up Fort Salonga. All very nice places that I would consider moving to if I had to move further west. As far as Northport goes, I would stick north of 25A. That's just a personal preference, no disrepect intended to anyone who lives south of 25A.

For those who may not be familiar with Northport:
Northport is a village (incorporated in 1894) in the northeast part of the Town of Huntington, in the northwest part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Northport in the Town of Huntington is bordered on the north by Northport Bay, the Village of Asharoken and the Hamlet of Fort Salonga; on the east by the Hamlet of Fort Salonga; on the south by the Hamlet of East Northport; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Centerport and Northport Harbor.
The Village of Northport has a different border than does the "Northport, NY 11768" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Northport, NY 11768" mailing address and not be in the Village of Northport): places that have a "Northport, NY 11768" mailing address that are not in the Village of Northport are in the Hamlet of Eatons Neck, the Village of Asharoken, the Hamlet of Fort Salonga, the Hamlet of East Northport and the Hamlet of Centerport.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

In RVC, the area around the golf course is very nice, especially around Molloy College. When I searched the MLS I saw some very nice tudors on the market, but I didn't see too many of the Victorians.

To the OP, the "little island" off Northport you are referring to is most likely Eaton's Neck, which is a peninsula. It does have an island feel to it, though, as it is accessed by a narrow road on the water. Eaton's Neck is beautiful. There are some stunning showcase houses overlooking the water, and quite a few houses that are middle of the road in terms of architecture, but still standouts because of they way everything is meticulously kept up. It's quiet, too and has a real safe feel to it. It's very "Leave -it-to-Beaver"-ish. There is one Huntington Town beach, as well as a town boat ramp, but these do not seem to generate an unbearable amount of traffic through the area. Except for the showcase houses, the prices in Eaton's Neck have always been reasonable (albeit not cheap), given what you get in the visual return, and here's why: you are a minimum of 6 miles away from any type of commercial activity at all, even a deli. This means that if you forgot to buy the milk, you are looking at a half hour expedition for same. If you have kids, and they are involved in activities, be prepared for lots and LOTS of back and forth driving into Northport and surrounding areas, which will require some time. It would be manageable for a SAHM, I think, but very tough otherwise. The road into Eaton's Neck passes through exclusive, beachy Asharoken, which is quite pretty to look at, but you better not speed. The Asharoken police are EVERYWHERE and will pull you over for sure, even if you are traveling only slightly over the limit. They are known for it. It's a really beautiful area but the travel requirements associated with day-to-day living on LI would preclude it for many.

Dix Hills to Grden City = 20 miles
Northport to Grden City = 25 miles
Keep in mind this doesnt include traffic, which we have a little bit here on LI.

Dix Hills would be much easier since it is much closer to the LIE and NSP. A couple of co-workers come from Huntington to Westbury and it takes 30 min on avg, maybe 35. This is taking Westbury Rd. to John St. to Old Country Rd.

Right.
Northport would tack on about 25 mins more. Northport is just that, very far North of the expressway.
