Some people insist on posting nothing but bad things about Long island, or even making things worse than they really are well here is some good news. Crime on Long Island which is very low and much lower than the national average to begin with saw yet another drop, with the biggest drop occurring in major crime which is now at its lowest point in 41 years in Nassau County.
An increasingly aged population along with one that boasts a higher than average income has helped drive down the crime rate in Nassau, Suozzi said. In addition, lower crime rates in the city create less "spillover" crime in the suburbs, he said.
Usually a bigger factor than policing, not to discount the better policing methods (good on the LI LEOs). I'd keep an eye out for growing clusters of young and poor as a bellwether for a reversal.
And the better news is that it's not a LI only thing but national.
Quote:
The most current federal data show crime is dropping nationally. Violent crime fell 1.8 percent and property crime was down 2.6 percent in the first six months of 2007 compared to the same period in 2006, according to the FBI.

That's true in New York City as well. I think it has something to do with the aging population. It's great news, though. Some places are not safe art all. Think of Camden or Detroit .

Amen Smash! Very good comment! Nassau and Suffolk crime indices are low...for a place with lots and lots of people, it's safer than most. Thanks for finally posting a positive comment!

Reason: Not including Queens and Brooklyn in Long Island descript.
