I have lots of friends who live there. I hear nice things about the schools-they go with Plainview kids-and the location is good. The people I know are off Round Swamp/Haypath area-lots of kids. I like the location-close to major roads and shopping.

It's a pretty small area, somewhat secluded. I like it better than Plainview for that reason, but they're very similar.

For those who may not be familiar with Old Bethpage
For those who may not be familiar with Old Bethpage:
Old Bethpage is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east part of Nassau County, along the Nassau/Suffolk County line and the Oyster Bay/Huntington and the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Old Bethpage in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Plainview; on the east by the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington and the Hamlet of East Farmingdale in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County (the Nassau/Suffolk County line and the Oyster Bay/Huntington and the Oyster Bay/Babylon town line); on the south by the Village of Farmingdale; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Bethpage and the Hamlet of Plainview.
The Hamlet of Old Bethpage has a different border than does the "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" postal zone (i.e., a place can have an "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Old Bethpage and a place can be in the Hamlet of Old Bethpage and have other than an "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" mailing address): places in the Hamlet of Old Bethpage that do not have an "Old Bethpage, NY 11804" mailing address have a "Plainview, NY 1803" and a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

We are moving right next to it, same school district and it's nice over there..quiet, and yes, more trees, plus the walking trail, which I'm looking forward to (my, that was a lot of commas!)

Nice town , a few decent ballfields and parks. Only downside is the droning of helicopters taking off and landing from your new wonderful corporate neighbor, Cablevision , located on Stewart Ave. in Bethpage.

It's good in the sense that there's virtually no crime, the property holds it's value and the schools are considered very good. In my opinion? Everyone I've ever known from Plainview was a jerk and there's little charm or character to be found. I don't know where the Plainview 'tude comes from, but I think it's pretty well known around the Island, certainly in Nassau County.
Old Bethpage is probably a little different, but they're closely linked and share a school district. It's definitely a little more inviting than Plainview, and tucked away in a corner (as mentioned earlier) but still close to parkways. I never knew anyone that lived there, so my assumptions could be pretty far off....but I thought it was worth mentioning. Basically, my biggest worry about moving there would be "how awful are my neighbors going to be" and "do I really want my kids growing up with THEIR kids?" There's no real hidden dangers lurking in that area, what you see is what you get!
Syosset is also vaguely similar to Plainview/Old Bethpage in some areas, but on a whole a lot more diverse. Out of those three I like Port Washington the best, even with it's supposed issues regarding illegal immigrants and weaker schools....best bet (as always) is to hit the streets and see for yourself! Good luck and let us know what you go with.
