I woke up to 57 degrees and had the thermostat set at 64 all night. Brrrrr!

heating systems are designed to deal with a certain temperature span like air conditioning.

the extreme cold will leave the house that much cooler as the system can't keep up..

ac is designed for about a 30-35 degree reduction or so. if temperatures go above 100 the house may only be in the 80's instead of the 70's . same thing applys to heat.

The snow pack you have surrounding your home also keeps that temp lower.

actually snow may keep it warmer , the snow is an insulator from the cold at 32 degrees . that is why eskimos live in igloos.

Right you are, just like the clouds. What I should have stated is that the snow pak on the ground is contributing to the cold feeling but without it, it would be feeling even colder.

Yes. It's 55 outside right now. I look at LI weather report and it just reaffirms why we are heading south for good in a couple years. Hopefully our kids do not discover our address.

Our system had trouble going above 64F. Can't keep up with the heat loss / difference from outside.
