4. I'm happy you save $65. That's admirable and quite a haul. I pay $30 for my weekly service. I'd pay $75. I can't stand yard work. I have a dozen equally important and more satisfying things to do (yes, duh, posting on here is one of them...). To me it's money well spent.
I know you say you left the thread but I want you to look over your bills from them.
$30/week is their base charge. If you look, you should see other charges added on ranging from $25 to $50 each. That's where they make their money:
Crabgrass control
Lime
Pesticides
Insect control
Fertilizer
Seeding
Power rake
Dethatching
Spring clean up $200 to $300
Fall clean up $200 to $300
I just mowed my own lawn twice in the past 2 weeks since I moved to burbs. And I did find it enjoyable and relaxing, all 0.4 acres of it. I do use a cordless electric mower, so it barely makes any sound compared to a gas motor. So it doesn't annoy the neighbors. BTW, electric mower technology is pretty awesome these days. My new mower blows away the POS corded electric mower I use to push around as a teenager.
And for those who look down on people that do their own "manual" labor, google up the median/mean salary of a gastroenterologist. I mow my own damn lawn because I like to, not because I can't afford to.
Damn, your neighbors must think you are ghetto. LOL. My town isn't as affluent as yours and I felt awkward cutting my grass last week. Everyone on my block have a landscaper.
I'm a Registered Environmental Health Specialist in New Jersey and I say that leaf blowers are a menace to public health. The way to attack them is through local noise ordinances. If they go over 65 decibels, they're in violation. You can get a decent enough noise meter on ebay for not very much money and then pester your local health department until they do something. They're insanely used and there ought to be much more consideration on the matter.
My "three sons" rock! They arrive Thursday afternoon and in 15 minutes they edge, cut and blow out yard...and then they're gone.
My neighbor on Saturday spends an hour weedwhacking with a gas edger, 2+ hours cutting his backyard and then uses an electric blower for another 30 minutes blowing off driveway.

Spring is here again, and once again I'm the only guy on the block doing his own yard.
I have no embarrassment as I have the biggest house, and biggest lot in my section. And since my house was a recent sale and the sale price is public, all my neighbors probably also know its the most expensive house in the section.
