Just making sure you know that the commute from the towns you listed is pretty long - probably 90 minutes. That said, good luck! Did you look in Bohemia? It is close to the Rinkonkoma station and has apartments.
Thank you and I just did I have been searching for places for the past few weeks and it seems like places run out quickly, or that is what I am told. I did find an apartment in Port Jefferson but the property agent refuses to send me an application to freeze on the apartment despite calling her every single day. I am annoyed! Could it be because I have a very Asian-sounding name? Are they racist around that part of town?
Port Jeff rents out quickly. As far as racism, I haven't encountered it. It's a primarily white neighborhood, followed by Asian. The Fairfield has openings in Port Jeff. The commute would be about 25-40 min, depending on traffic. I personally avoid the train station. Vagrants/addicts always walking around.
And keep in mind, living in Suffolk County leads to an hour to an hour and a half on the train one way to get into NYC. And if you're looking to go to the city just to hang out and socialize, there is plenty to do on Long Island. You aren't going to be living in the boondocks where you need to go to the city to have any fun. Most of the towns that you are looking at have some good suburban-fun options available.

I agree. I was trying to make this point but you did it much better.
Thank you DaisyLI and skeeter! Yes, I am aware it is a long commute to NYC. I won't be commuting everyday that is for certain but I'd like the convenience of going to the city often. Most of these towns seem to have suburban feel and that is A-okay with me but my only problem is I don't have a car and prefer walking around my neighborhood in case I want to go grocery shopping or walk to a nearby restaurant or a mall.
If you're looking to walk to grocery stores, I'd avoid PJ Village. The closest grocery is Bravo, and you need to walk past the vagrants/addicts/dealers. If you're going to be without a car and need to be in walking distance of shops, etc, I think you're better off renting in Nassau County. Suffolk is sprawled out more. Downside to living in Nassau is housing is more expensive and your hubby will need to commute longer. Honestly? On this island you need a car. You'd solve a lot of problems buying a cheap car for yourself. You'd be able to open up your search tremendously.

You know when a Bravo opens up in town its not a good sign. Oh wait...
Sounds like the South Shore communities in Nassau (Bellmore, etc) would be best since they have stuff like real normal grocers in their towns and good train service, but make sure that wallet is fat because you have to be rich to live there. Rents will definitely be higher.
If it has to be Suffolk Patchogue has more to offer than PJ Village.
Thank you for all your help everyone! I was there last week and your suggestions really helped narrow my apartment search. After seeing a few places, in Sayville, Patchogue, P.Jefferson and Babylon we finally narrowed down on a place in Farmingdale, close to to the train. I would really appreciate any info on the neighborhood, like in terms of safety, places to avoid and stuff like that. I am really nervous but you guys have been Awesome! Pat yourself for helping a poor soul
