Intel science competition names 69 LI semifinalists
Intel science competition names 69 LI semifinalists -- Newsday.com (broken link)
"As usual, the Three Village school district in the Stony Brook/Setauket area captured the region's highest number of semifinalist awards with 13, while Port Washington and Half Hollow Hills each took six. Other districts boasting multiple winners included Bellmore-Merrick and Syosset with five apiece, Jericho and Roslyn, each with four, and East Williston and Great Neck, with three apiece."
"Typically, Long Island produces more winners than any other region of the country in the Intel competition, which culminates in a $100,000 first prize. Wednesday's total fell short of the Island's record 89 semifinalists in 2003. Even so, the figure was nearly a quarter of the 300 prizes awarded nationally, and higher than the number of awards in the states of California, Texas, Illinois and Florida combined."

Every student who worked hard and entered this competition, whether they made it to the semifinals or not, deserves heartfelt congrats. I am proud of all of them! Way to go to all the entrants! Best of luck in the next round to the semifinalists!

Not shocking that there is little response to this...there's really no negative spin people can take on it.

Believe it or not, the local newspaper (which serves the 3V's) has had a few negative blog comments. What is with people?

There shouldn't have been any. Between 1600 - 1700 students nationwide enteredt his competition; not all students needed the services, facilities or mentoring from a large university. That is where the negative posting sprung from on the local 3V blog.
The following is a snippet of the blog; only a few of the Intel posts.
To wit:

As I read it, the only thing critical in the Intel post was the rather obvious omission of the university contribution. Judging from the shrillness of some of the responses, it could be that another of the district's little secrets was touched on.

Of course having Stonybrook helps, but our community is owed at least that much from the university for not contributing anything to our school taxes, while we educate all their resident's children for free. Our students are the ones doing all the work, and deserve the credit.

when kids fail it's the teachers fault, when they succeed it's because they have the advantage of a good research school nearby...what else ya got? How about this: kids do well because they work hard and are motivated, and they fail because they don't, and aren't. End of story.

Just because the students live in the same district as Stony Brook University, they shouldn't be acknowledged for their hard work? Way to take down the kid's spirits. That was a pretty sad comment, a new low for the blog. I suspect that even GK/WIzard would be happy to hear of their accomplishments.

re- Fine and good, but, um, doesn't the presence of a large research university in the district (the only one on LI) have anything at all to do with this?
Do we really have to complain about everything? Give me a break, it was an accomplishment that deserved to be noticed. Stop trying to bring down every little thing. The kids deserve a little more respect. Good job to everyone involved. I am proud of you as well.
To the previous poster, stop trying to tear down our community.

"Congratulations to all the students, teachers, and families for their hard work."

Not even a teensy-weensy bit?
