I say we ban everything and just at each other in silence for all eternity.

Since the Democratic Party stood for slavery (and fought to extend it here in the US) about the same time as the Confederate Battle Flag it is indeed curious that the PC police have not banned it and its symbol. Perhaps because the PC police are frequently overcompensating Democrats in any case.

The neighborhood busybodies are upset? Too bad. It's his house, and he can fly what he wants on his own property.

A lot of these flags went up in the civil rights era to stubbornly show those coloreds who's in charge. Personally, the rebel flag means nothing but as a perverse symbol of defeat. It may as well be taken down because it is part of a backward-looking obsession not with tradition but with past failures.

The flag has become one of those culture war issues that conservatives and in particular Southerners spend energy on instead of engaging more productively in national politics. You can always fight about the flag and where it should be displayed and what it means while the nation continues to decline and Americans continue to become alienated from one another. Its value even as an emblem of regional solidarity is dubious, and its connection with the slave system is hard to deny.

Symbols are sometimes important, but is this one? To me it would be better for Southerners to have allowed it to fade with some dignity in the 80s and 90s than to keep it alive until liberals finally prevail in pressuring to have it removed. But for some people never retreating is a virtue.

Actually it's more often Yankees with their panties in a knot about the flag. And rather than show "those coloreds" as you put it, whose in charge it was more to say FU to DC and Northerners. After all the "coloreds" were dealing with more direct BS daily than a flag over the state house.

But it's time the Battle Flag over the SC state house came down, and guess what? It did.

Maybe if the South wanted to be proud it should have won its war.

For every one taken down 10 more go up. Not a race issue, but an issue of REBEL pride. And each of us here is a REBEL in some way. So sad this country lets 20% of the total population dictate what is right for the rest of the country to see .
Be careful what you wish for or support. Fore who knows what the next PC offence will be.

You do realize that you're not making sense?

Anyway while the South did have major victories early on there really wasn't much chance of them winning a war with the North. The odds were against them and the best they could hope for was to make the war so costly for the Union that they would leave the Confederacy alone.

Also don't think that Lincoln was the second coming as he was not an abolitionist, and didn't make slavery an issue until 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation which only applied to the Confederate States, and only if they didn't return to the Union; it did not apply to slave states in the North (Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, Missouri and the part of Virginia which was to become West Virginia). Not to mention his breaking of a few articles in the Constitution.

I'm glad the Union was maintained but the war and society of the period was more complex than the average person understands.

If you're so offended, you could always call the police like this hypersensitive jackass did.
