No, I will not be accepting of your beliefs if they are racist, homophobic, etc. It is one's right to hold whatever beliefs, but nobody is obliged to respect them.

I respect your right to have your beliefs. I'm pro gay rights. But I respect your right to voice opposition. This is America.

My sorrow and sadness is passing slowly, now my anger is kicking in. As a former Navy nurse I too have served this country and i have a huge problem with the name calling and insults in this thread.

Whether you and some like you want to acknowledge or not, the Constitution is the law of the land and needs to be respected. Our highest court made a profound decision, protecting everyone's right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I am far from being a "liberal retard" nor am I part of the P.C. police. What I am is a human being with a right to my feelings, something that a lot of people in this country frown upon. I am African -American and a woman and I have RIGHTS. The right to live in my country and live free and without fear of narrow minded individuals threatening me,and taking away my right to LIVE, whether it be by waving a flag that stood for white supremacy or trying to take away my right to vote by using gerrymandering or voter suppression, or still continuing to burn down black churches across the South!
This issue is about more than a flag. It's about hate, domination and POWER. The Battle Flag of Northern Virginia - aka the Confederate Flag, a flag as I understand has been hijacked by racists groups and is not itself inherently racist. While I acknowledge that people are free to utilize this flag (thanks to the First Amendment) those same people must acknowledge all the views that flag has been used to represent. Just like you can't separate the swastika from the Holocaust, you cannot separate confederate battle flag from slavery and white supremacy.
If you want to fly that flag all day long that is YOUR right but others have the right to call that flag what it is, a symbol of racism. The one thing I believe is that it should never be flown on government properties or buildings. I don't want my tax dollars supporting hate.

The Huntington Coat of Arms apparently has or had a portion of Sir Oliver Cromwell's family coat of arms and some local Irish Americans were really upset about that a few years ago. Cromwell, it is believed, was directly responsible for the death of hundred of thousands of Irish Catholics. The presence of Cromwell's family's symbols effectively endorsed this hateful and racist conduct towards Irish Americans or so some folks said. I think the coat of arms was removed.
I suppose there is no ethnic group that has a monopoly on past suffering and hurt feelings related to symbols. It does us all well to remember that.

Does the battle flag in any way remind you of the hundreds of thousands of white union soldiers who died fighting to end slavery?

Why is it every time there is a discussion about slavery, every poor white group is brought up. A complete cop-out. We all know that white soldiers died to keep the Union together, not to end slavery! . Even Lincoln himself didn't care about the slaves, he cared about keeping the Country intact. Ending slavery was a means to an end.

The Irish and many poor immigrants came to this country of their own volition...they were not sold like chattel, killed for sport and had their families parceled out like the commodity this country thought they were. Let's not go down this road OK. Black people were property, plain and simple...with no rights and weren't even considered to be human beings.

My friend was MURDERED because of the idea that flag represented and in the memory of the innocents in that Church, and the many innocents slain because of the color of their skin the flag needs to be removed from federally funded buildings. THIS is MY opinion. I have cried every single night since the murders and I am tired of crying. I'm tired of asking God why this happened in HIS house and I'm tired of hearing hate filled people trying to convince me and others that that flag isn't fueling a hate filled ideology.

Actually the SC created the Right to Dignity, whatever that means. Everyone is already covered under the Constitution.

If you believe that I have a bridge to sell you. My husband, who is in law enforcement, and I ALWAYS get pulled over and questioned when we drive through South Carolina. I guess 2 middle aged AA's driving with NY license plates fit the profile. One time we were on our way to Florida , driving hubby's truck which sports Fraternal Order of Police plates, and we still got pulled over in South Carolina. The cop started panicking when he realized he messed up and claimed we were "driving too slow"...ugh don't get me started. I could write a book.
