When will the madness stop? How many more people have to be taken from their families before we get it out here?!?! It seems every other day I turn on the news there is a DWI arrest or fatality.

Are the laws and penalties to weak out here? Do the police need to step up more check points? Something needs to change and we know idiots are going to keep getting behind the wheel.

Love, light and inner peace to those all affected by drunk driving.

old news...DWI on LI is seemingly an old problem. Poor mass transit is partly to blame.

I served on Nassau county grand jury for a month about 9 years ago. We listened to about 80 cases..I would say 70 out of the 80 I heard was all DWI....I was shocked

First offense - mandatory jail time. Non-negotiable.

And lower the legal limits for starters.

You're kidding right? you're going to blame poor mass transit for part of the DWI problem and not the individuals selfish, reckless decision to get behind a wheel intoxicated? There's no excuse, NONE!

I wonder how many of the blind liberal followers who jump on the anti-gun/anti 2A band wagon and consume alcohol? Because while they are fighting to violate law abiding Americans constitutional rights they are supporting an industry that kills more people each day in the USA than guns, and while we are at it let's mention the medical costs due to alcohol disease/sickness and how many abused and neglected children are suffering from alcoholics in the households.

But blind liberals cannot think for themselves, they need to follow politicians agenda. And what is a politicians agenda? to get re-elected anyway they can.

Is the legal DRUG alcohol a problem in our society? You're better believe it but it makes too much money and that money trumps all the carnage. So I guess the "children" really don't matter to liberals when money can be made.

While Nassau County has one of, if not THE harshest set of laws in this regard, there is still a lot of interpretation, for lack of better word, by the judges who sit on these cases. A friend owns a business in Nassau next to a bar, and 2 of his customers, blew the exact same high number (what ever that means) on a 1st offense, no damage and no injury to any party. One got a very current model expensive car seized and 2 years probation the other got his 10 year old station car seized and a years probation. Obviously, there may be some mitigating facts he is not aware of, but, if you want to put teeth into it you need to eliminate any interpretation and set standards, no negotiating. That will never happen since there is a bundle of $$$ being made by attorneys who handle such cases.

Shouldn't the title be "America and DWI. It's time to get serious!"?

Yet gun owners are considered felons if they put a flash suppressor or collapsible stock on their rifles. the rifle is just as deadly, but it makes the gun look "meaner" so that's not allowed. Meanwhile, the amount of people killed in NYS due to DWI is equivalent to a jumbo jet crashing leaving no survivors - once a year! How backwards is our society?!?!

Apparently the lawyer & alcohol lobbies have deep enough pockets for these politicians to stick their grubby hands in and allow the carnage to continue...Thank you Cuomo and all the other sellouts!!

Part of being an adult in civilized society is coming to terms with the fact that people are going to do dumb things like drive drunk no matter what penalties you throw at them. We already have among the harshest DWI laws in the country - car seizures, mandatory interlock installation, thousands of dollars in fines and fees, no pleading down, etc. And yet the people who are causing the problems are typically driving around at way past the legal limit (people that had 2-3 beers with dinner and drive home don't statistically pose a problem), with suspended or revoked licenses, etc.

Do we really have the money and prison space to to incarcerate everyone who so much as looks at a beer when we're letting rapists and murderers go with light sentences? Plus, if you make those sentences harsh enough, people will start fleeing from the police just like violent offenders do.

Illegal immigration doesn't help either. The Hispanic peasants we're getting have decidedly unenlightened views when it comes to driving while intoxicated.

I said partly....I agree there is no excuse. So why are there so many DWI? My own experience at jury duty was 70 DWI cases out of 80...its not a small %...meaning 10 cases were drugs, assault, trespassing, etc. So much more DWI than NYC...yes its unfair to compare. I've taken the late night LIRR full of drunk passengers....its pretty disgusting & wild....I thought, at least they are not driving.
