Hi,
I live in Dix hills, NY (town of huntington) and my taxes went up by around $1300 from 2014-15 to 2015-16 (12k to 13.3k) . Has anyone experienced a similar tax increase or know the reason behind it. I will call the town but know that they will give me some BS reason. Is there a way to fight back on this type of increase. Any help is appreciated.

Regards
AJ

Something doesn't sound right. I've noticed increases of $200-$400 on average - nothing anywhere near $1,300.
Is it possible you lost your STAR exemption? That's what it looks like to me; for the HHH SD it was $953/yr. If your taxes increased around $350, plus the loss of STAR, you get approx. $1300.

If you're not sure one way or the other, check your tax bill or go online and have a look!

Thanks Elke, I called the town and it was the star exemption. Somehow it did not renew automatically.

You have to renew it yourself through Albany I believe. I think the Town Hall has applications, and they should certainly have the information about a phone number to call in Albany and the best way to get it taken care of before you end up without it again.
