Does anyone know of some type of lot or field underneath the flight path or approach of airplanes where you can watch them land and take off? Preferably near MacArthur Airport? I have a nephew who is obsessed with airplanes and I would like to take him somewhere where you can hang out and watch them land overhead. I thought it would be cool to see them up close...

Thanks

Just go to the airport and hang out in the parking lot.

Park along Lincoln Ave in Holbrook, although the view will be quick. If you want a pretty cool view, go to the shopping center on Union between Coates and Main St. Momo's Sports Bar and Meat Farms. You can see planes coming in from the east for quite a distance and watch them get bigger and bigger. They pass directly over the parking lot. He'd probably love it.

Problem with ISP is that there aren't that many flights. Almost better to take a trip to JFK and see a lot of different planes take off and land.

Or, if you ever get the chance to go to Sint Maarten...

I don't know of any good places but i know a good app to use so you know what planes are flying over your head. FlightRadar24. it's a paid app but worth it's weight in gold IMHO. I have spent less than $100 on apps in the last 6 years. I loved the free version so I had to buy the full version. It's on Android too but I personally like the iphone app better. The app offers a 3d view (google fly over map) as well as augmented view where you can point the phone toward where the plane is and it'll tell u which one it is.

Flight tracking apps - Flightradar24 - Live flight tracker!

I have been to St. Maarten but it was via cruise. Wish I would have seen those planes land, that's what I am talking about...

We've done the St. Martin trip. There's a bar and grill right there with the flight arrivals on board. It was fun. Once.

Nope, I bought there, just so that I can watch planes with my kids... extremely disappointing !!

Pidge... just busting your chops !!

OP...
The Meat Farms parking lot (north-East end of airport) is the closest you can have the St. Martins experience at. Too many trees everywhere.

There is also an ATM at the intersection of Lakeland and Vets.... but not many planes land/take off from there, but it will give you unobstructed view.

Whats not helping you is that its not a busy airport. If you are visiting the DC area..... check this out...
Gravelly Point Park, Ronald Reagan Ntnl’ Airport, Arlington, Virginia, USA

I did it once and kids had a blast !!

New Highway near Republic airport, just north of the SSP. I used to see people there parked on the side of the road just hanging out watching takeoffs and landings. These will be smaller planes however.
