Nassau County Jail Sheriff Sposato began having his workers cut down healthy trees that have shielded the view of the jail for East Meadow residents on Clearmeadow Drive to make way for a parking lot for employees. This action was taken with no prior notice given to residents in the area. Work was halted when a visibly upset and shaken resident pleaded with workers to "stop killing the trees!" But not before a large number of trees were already removed giving residents in that section a full unattractive view of the jail that was once buffered by these trees. Calls to Kate Murray's and Gary Hude's office were answered with "that is Nassau County property". Last I checked town of Hempstead was located in Nassau County. Typical political speak when it does not serve to further their agenda. Please help spread this to your neighbors and friends as this work cannot be resumed.

I wish you luck but if South Oyster Bay Road spanning multiple towns was any indication, it's a losing battle.

Exactly. It's a municipality, so they are going to replace the trees with new growth, but if a parking lot is required, where are they supposed to put it?

Default So what?

There is history behind what is now the Nassau County jail. When it was erected it was a minimum security facility, never was it supposed to become maximum. The trees were planted years ago as a buffer so that residents along that stretch that abuts the jail would not have to view the facility. As time has progressed there has been problems upon problems. Toxic smoke from pipes on jail property going flowing into people's backyards not to mention the noise from the maintenance workers at all hours of the night.

I highly doubt you would be saying so what if this were your backyard and before you say something like I wouldn't of bought there, most of us are long time residents when the jail's footprint as a minimum security facility was much much smaller. In addition we pay between 10-12k in taxes and now we have this to look at?

They have other property to place the parking lot on but the sheriff doesn't want it in front of his office.

That toxic smoke you're talking about comes the medical centers power plant. That is NOT located on jail grounds. The old jails footprint has been there since the 50s or 60's, that was set up with dorms for minimum security & cells for maximum security. The expanded parts are old trailers set up as minimum security. Also, the Sheriff has a parking lot directly in front of his office.

DPS, send me a message. The County has a County-level Tree Ordinance, specifically for County Roads, which requires a process to be followed, and of course, it was not followed here. Legislation which County Executive Mangano voted in favor of (and was approved) back in 2008 when he was a Legislator.

The tree work, just like the work on other County Roads, is for an agenda beyond jails, or sidewalks, or visibility, or Sandy damage, or whatever other excuse they will plan to pull out next depending on what neighborhood they are interested in visually destroying at the moment.

First, Looks Great is the contractor conducting *all* of this work. You know, the contractor that received $70 million during Sandy. I say no more.

Second, the amount of money allocated to tree planting during the Suozzi days, was about $50K. Because no one took down any trees, there was no agenda attached. The last three years? Close to $10 million has been allocated in tree replanting (which is never properly implemented), to continue a cycle of financial waste. Keep an eye out for any small little twig 'replanted' in your area on a major road. They are never watered, never maintained, not even properly planted. 75% of them are dead. This is intentional.

There were a few trees on Carman Avenue removed last year, same backward reason, the jail. Then they installed a very expensive Laser Industries-esque fence, lol. Now, a year later, we are looking to make work.

Again, send me a note. S. Oyster Bay Road was, as we have identified a different beast. The goal was to create a clear zone to allow for truck travel to barrel down to Grumman. Other roads, other agendas. Clinton Road/Stewart Avenue the County wants to expand and take down 70 trees, that's for planned truck travel too. They butchered a few in Freeport a few months ago, that's the utility company keeping themselves busy. Residential in streets where the Town may have removed a tree or two? That's because LIPA is installing monster, unsightly utility poles that Cuomo called up HUD to exploit via FEMA money that should be going to residents still not in their homes. The bottom line is, there is always an agenda, and, the more people that collectively organize against this nonsense, the better. It's destroying quality of life, property value, impacts the environment (the air quality in Nassau is full of PM 2.5 particulates that cause cancer, which trees help to filter out), and, it's expensive to boot. This comes out of the general fund, and often, each tree removed, is paid out, per tree. If I gave you the cost of each removal, you'd be marching down to Mineola.

Called Kate Murray, Gary Hudes, Dennis Dunne, Ed Mangano's offices. Each one is passing the buck to the other. This is what politicians do. It's a real shame.
