West Hampton is "ok". You can find deals and still tell people you live in "The Hamptons".
Just be ready to deflect and avoid answering which Hampton, giving out the West may get some eye rolls.
South Shore is pretty lame. Beaches, bagel shops and pizzerias.

Why is that? Is the West the only "not expensive" part of the Hampton?

If you live in West Hampton, I guess you could always tell people you live in Southampton Township if you really care about what people think. Southampton Township covers a very wide area, including places like Quogue, Remsenburg, Hampton Bays, etc (all west of the Shinnecock Canal).
But many people consider "The Hamptons" to be only areas east of the Shinnecock Canal. Southampton, Bridgehampton, Water Mill, Sagaponic (all parts of Southampton Township), as well as Wainscott, East Hampton, Amagansett, Napeague (part of East Hampton Township), and Sag Harbor (which is part of both East Hampton and Southampton Townships). Then there is Montauk (part of East Hampton Township), which some people don't consider part of "The Hamptons".
But really, who cares what others think, as long as you are happy. You shouldn't get so caught up in labels. Just move to the place you like, and can afford.
West Hampton is too far from the cool bars and restaurants that are mainly starting in Southampton then head out east and sandwiched between Speonk and Hampton Bays two very cheap towns
Also westhampton is getting a lot of Orthodox lately.
Last time I rented in Westhampton was 1993 and the ONLY time we could get folks to come to our house was Friday Night or late Sunday afternoon on the way out or way home. No body in right mind would come near the joint on a Saturday. Next year we rented in Shincock Hills near Southampton

There's always Hampton Bays if you must have a "Hampton".
It has a sketchy reputation but in all honesty I don't think it's that bad.
Still blows away most of Nassau.

What's wrong with Nassau? I know people who live in nice neighborhoods there. Are you saying Nassau doesn't look that nice?
Agreed. Pick up a tiny piece of East Hampton and drop it in Nassau and you have Point Lookout.
