As mentioned in other threads, I'm planning to move to Long Island soon. Someone told me that there are village tax, in addition to county tax, in some areas. Is that true? Can you guys give me the areas in nassau county? Thanks.
Every single Village has a village tax, too long to list them all. With that being said having a Village Tax doesn't really mean your taxes are higher than if you were outside of the village. In incorporated villages, some of the services that are provided by the town or county elsewhere will instead be provided by the village. As a result while you have an extra village tax, your town and county taxes will typically be lower in a village than outside of it.
Sometimes it's a wash. What you save by cutting out the county you pick up on the village tax. Normally, it's cheaper living in a village. Sometimes it's more expensive.
Gotta do your homework if you intend on living within an incorporated village.
There are other things besides the taxes to consider, a quick example would be school district boundaries.

I don't know where you got this idea - you really think the county gives you a break because you have your own police force? They don't. The county doesn't provide that many overlapping services. They don't provide trash pickup, the Towns usually do. And the village police forces can only handle small cases. If there's a murder, the county steps in.

You'll have county tax, then Town tax, and if you happen to settle into an incorporated village, you will have that tax on top of the previous two.
Thanks for the clarification. Okay, so I was definitely right about Northport and it having its own village tax. Downtown Huntington erroneously or perhaps generously colloquially called Huntington village, doesn't levy a separate village tax?
