I have been noticing a recent uptick in business with the corporation I work with over the last month+. From my perch it appears that July was a horrific bottom, but things have been coming up since (modestly, but growing). I am hearing similar sentiments (albeit VERY cautious) from a number of vendors I work with...

While I am not about to redo my kitchen given the uncertainty that is still being felt I am wondering if we are starting the long, slow climb out of the current recession. Has the corporate herd thinned? Are the strong starting to grow again? Is it still horrible in your company? I still see many empty storefronts locally. Just curious about the long island community's sentiment on the current economy.

Where I work (office in Manhattan) they have been hiring in all offices (mostly upper level personnel), plus they opened a new office in another state.

However, they did take the opportunity this year to "not give any raises due to the bad economy" and "only give bonuses to EXCEPTIONAL workers." I got a great review, but "the metrics were too high this year" for me to get a bonus. Nobody else I know got one either. But we all know they are using our raises and bonuses to help fund their growth. Anyone else end up with the same?

MSNBC declared the recession over as of August. I saw it on TV.

Unemployed people can't spend a lot of money on goods and services.
