fopt65,
I think it has a lot to do with many different things. When things go bad with the school systems, people with young kids tend to shy away from those areas. Then when things bounce back, they come back. Right now both districts are having some issues...All it means is you need to keep an eye on it.

I grew up in Wantagh and loved it. Still do, but unfortunately left to move to Phoenix. Wish I was still there. Schools are very good (I would stick with Wantagh school dist. over Levittown school dist.) Taxes are high there, but if u can afford it, great.

I live in Levittown and the school district is fine - It doesnt compare to Wantagh, but I would say Levittown schools (Mac Arthur and Salk are in the boat with Merrick or Bellmore schools.
Levittown is a great place to live - we love it here

I grew up in East Meadow during the 50s and 60s but haven't been there (other than driving down Hempstead Tpke once in a blue moon) since the mid 1970s. I sold my parents house in East Meadow (your basic Levitt cape) after my dad died in the mid-1990s. Haven't really been there since.. so now I'm curious, what's been going on with the schools and the demographics??
I know Hempstead Turnpike is starting to look like a junior version of Queens Blvd but that's been for awhile now. Also that huge monstrosity of the Nassau County Medical Center (it used to be called Meadowbrook Hospital back in the day!) doesn't help the landscape either. But there's still Salisbury, ooops I mean Eisenhower Park!
So what's the deal with East Meadow these days...???

I am not bashing Levitown but some homes in Wantagh are in that SD and those homes do not appreciate as fast.

Update:
The Wantagh school district & teachers agreed on a contract. FYI.

I have lived here all my life. It once had a small town feel but is now considered congested. The staff at the local library are known to be nasty, the post office across the street, as other local businesses are very poorly planned out-strip malls with no thought whatsoever to aesthetic appeal (like that of Bellmore village).
The houses are quite overpriced as are the taxes. Houses are on the market now longer because people are not willing to pay what they are asking for-just so the homeowner can move as many are, out of state, for the above, and more reasons.
Their is the close proximity to the (Jones) Beach but there are other less costly places to live.

I lived in wantagh and now north bellmore. Never had a problem at the library. This is the way the south shore is built, its like this in every town around here.
Your statement about houses being over priced and taxes being too high are a problem across all of long island.
What areas are cheaper than wantagh that are considered just as good?
Would like to hear your opinion.

I think Wantagh, Bellemore, Seaford, and Massapequa have a lot of reasonable houses for the overall quality of the areas. Sure, it's not as cheap as it was 10 years, but not many places are.
