In Queens, you can get anywhere on foot or by mass transit
On Long Island, you need a car just to buy a quart of milk.

I can identify with that, living in Nassau without a car it is impossible to have a life. Buses run every 30-60 min and are often LATE, UNRELIABLE, and CROWDED.
It takes hours to go 5 miles on the bus system. It's a joke. And did I mention how crowded the buses are?

You can't compare the 5 boros to Long Island on ANY level.....

I have lived in Astoria, Brooklyn, Bayside and now Long Island and am not originally from the region. Whenever these discussions flare up I always wonder why it always has to be "city people are less "clique-y", I can walk to everything, there are no horrible soccer moms, and you can get into the city much easier" and then the counterpoint is "LI is not overcrowded, with a backyard your kids can actually play in and waiting on a bus to run errands sucks compared to just hopping in your car".
Guess what, there is no comparison between the city and Long Island because they are DIFFERENT. I loved living in the boros at a point in my life, now, the island is more suitable for my current work/life/family status. Just my preference. It sounds like some city folks have found that they hate it here. Guess what??? You prefer the city life, and that is not Long Island. Thousands move out to LI every year for the exact opposite reason...they tire of the city and decided that LI suits them better. My father in-law moved out of his Astoria neighborhood, raised his family on the island and post-divorce, (and after living on the island a while longer) realized deep down he was a city person...so he moved back to his old neighborhood. You know what he didn't do?? Generalize about all of long island and claim he was somehow superior and smarter for moving back...People in their life will hopefully have the option to choose where they live. Live where you are happiest if that is an option. But generalizing that peope who remain on the island and like it have never lived anywhere else or that anybody moving back to the city are plain crazy is just ignorant. Nobody is more enlightened than the other, they just prefer to live someplace else....sheesh...

I've lived in Manhattan and Queens up until 2 years ago. I've also lived in Chicago and upstate for college. I am very well aware of what NYC looks like, thanks. That being said, N and E Queens is very similar to South Shore and even some central Nassau areas. The "old school" Queens people are very similar to these people as well.
Like many people on this board, you seem to think you know a lot...perhaps you should check your facts.

You present a very skewed opinion of Long Island in all of your posts. Keep in mind that other people have different experiences. I have lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and at this time in my life, I DEFINITELY prefer Long Island. Easy access to the city when I want to be there, suburban living for an easier day to day.

I agree.
Coming from living in the boros (mostly Queens and Brooklyn my entire life), there is NOT one neighborhood that I find appealing (unless you like filth, congestion, extreme diversity (with the possibilty of being the minority if you actually speak English and are white), and crappy schools of course).
It sickens me to go visit friends and family. If I never had to go back I would not.
Give me my cookie cutter suburbs anyday.

But, of course, you have people complain when an area is gentrified, too. Oh no, all the Yuppies and their condos and SBUX are moving in. Some people are never happy. They should all move to Kansas and see how they like it.
Many people are like the liberals that are so liberal as long as you agree with them. If you do not, you are a terrible person, etc. Makes me laugh.

Funny, I saw a segment on the news that the people in ASTORIA are complaining about the new crowd from Williamsburg (white, hipster crowd) coming in and taking over Astoria. Oooo, they actually improve property values, as they did in Williamsburg, how DARE they!
You are so right.

I lived in Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. If you're saying that LI "south shore" people are anything like the people who live in any of the 5 boros, you're deluding yourself. Either that or you've never lived in the boros and are now saying you have to back up your point.
When I moved out here, at first, I thought it was just a matter of "getting used to LI".... well, it never happened. I have never and will never get used to this "lifestyle" that lacks both "life" and "style".... I will never get used to the fact that, no matter what I want, I have to drive to get it and that a 5 mile drive can take 20 minutes.... I will never get used to the crappy "attitudes" of the people out here who have some warped sense that they're above everyone else.... I will never get used to the fact that there is no culture.... I will never get used to the fact that everything on LI is cookie cutter.....
In my opinion, Long Island sucks. For those of you who love living here? More power to you. Keep paying your insanely high taxes for nothing. Keep sending your kids to the crappy schools. Keep sitting in traffic for hours on end. Enjoy your malls. Enjoy your soccer fields. Enjoy living in your blissfully ignorant suburban world.
