do yourself a favor. buy the house. anything can happen anywhere. if you are happy with the way the block looks, go for it. It is not like the house will not be worth anything in 7-8 years. If this is your first house, chances are you will trade-up in the next ten years. you could always trade-up in the future. Even houses in bad neighborhoods appreciate.BTW i think baldwin is a decent neighborhood.

Here we go steering again.....
How can you tell someone not to buy a home in a town? That's so so wrong on so many levels.

Because they are asking for opinions..........I could have lied and said "its a great area and use me for your inspector" or give an honest opinion which I did.

IMO, buying a house as soon as you can afford it is a good idea, I was never much for renting.
Most of Baldwin is still nicer than many other areas of Queens and other towns in Nassau but I still think that you can get a small cape in Bellmore or Franklin Square in your price range. I did an inspection last night in Franklin Square for a nice but dated small cape and the price was $289 which surprized me. There are small homes in Bellmore by Mepham HS that might fit your needs and should be in your price range. Big splits in that town are hovering above $400 so capes might be right in your range.

1. Do your own research.
2. Consult with buyers realtors.
3. Make your own informed decisions.
4. Go with what your heart and instincts tell you to do.
Only you know your situation, needs, priorities, etc.
Good Luck

We're going to see the house on Wednesday. I did google street view and it seemed pretty nice around there. I found out it's on the border of Baldwin Harbor, but not considered it. Just a couple blocks away. So since it's far from Sunrise highway, would that make it better than most areas of Baldwin?

The northern border of the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor is the median of Atlantic Avenue.
For those who may not be familiar with Baldwin Harbor:
Baldwin Harbor is a hamlet (an unincorporated community) in the southern part of the Town of Hempstead, in the center-south part of Nassau County
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Baldwin and the Village of Freeport; on the east by the Village of Freeport, Baldwin Bay and Middle Bay; on the south by the East Channel; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Oceanside.
Baldwin Harbor is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: places in the Hamlet of Baldwin Harbor have a "Baldwin, NY 11510" and "Freeport, NY 11520" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): http://www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

The one area around there that isn't too great is the immediate vicinity of Church Street and Milburn Avenue. There isn't a ton of crime or anything, but it's pretty run down looking. Lots of vacant storefronts/buildings. I've already spoke my peace on Baldwin many times over and don't care to do it again, but look at the house, talk to the neighbors, go up to the school and ask questions. Go back through this thread and look at the posts from people who actually LIVE in Baldwin.
I'm curious to hear how it goes, let us know!

I live off of Church in that area. The corner of Milburn and Church is rundown. It's not a terrible area, but I don't fancy a walk at midnight there either.
I've been in the area six years now. It is on the decline. However, it is still not a bad area. Then again, six years from now, I think it will be even worse. It's not a place I would buy into.

Moving to Baldwin
My husband and I saw a house in Baldwin we really liked. It is in the oceanside school district. I heard that the area north of sunrise is still a nice area. My daughter has a lot of friends who live in oceanside and baldwin and all go to school in oceanside. The area in Baldwin looks really nice around Loft ave. Has anyone heard of it? Is this a nice area?
