I knew last night when they said that the LIRR would be operational this morning that is was all a lie. Barely functional would have been a more accurate description. The LIRR is run solely for the benefit of the unions. Did you really think the lazy union worker was going to remove the snow?
And they have us by the balls with limited options to get into NYC. Fortunately, in this lifetime the LIRR is going to run into trouble as they keep raising rares - 1) city parking (Queens) becomes a viable option based on monthly garage costs, relative to tickets prices, and 2) autonomous cars will revolutionize how we get form point A to point B.
On a different note, are there any historic examples of self indulgent unions which have been successfully broken down, eventually?
I still remember the one union job I worked. Path Mark. About five minutes into this girl's shift, she's saying, "Let's see. I'm here for 6 hours, so I get two breaks. I'll take one at 2:00, and one at 4:00."
Better believe all the people I worked with made damn sure to get every second of every break. Not to mention the 7 minute rule. If you punched in or out between say 2:53 and 3:07, it counted as punching at 3:00. Yup, lots of people punching in at X:07, and out at X:53.
Maybe, we can make a separate thread about the LIRR unions. I'd really like to learn about everyone's commute today. I'm really worried about tomorrow.
Well its looking like for the evening commute, expect delays and cancellations. Every branch has a status of "Service Change", and says a train has been cancelled.
Good employees set realistic goals and over deliver. Bad employees are all puffery. Time and time again, they set unrealistic goals, and ultimately under deliver. That is why when they made that announcement last night I knew it was a big lie. The people that unfortunately paid the price were the poor saps who believed them and were stuck standing out on the train platforms.

That's because of bad management decisions. The big mistake this weekend was running the trains well into Saturday afternoon.

Primarily manufacturing..........by sending the jobs overseas.
735am Hicksville trains came but where packed but they showed up. Around 750 a train started in Hicksville every one got a seat but it was standing room only at the next stop. No trains to BK still.
Not wanting to deal with a disaster going home I took the 3:25(I think) it was canceled while we where on train and became the 3:42 no trains to Westbury or Carle Place. I don't think they did a bad job we got over 2ft of snow and the trains ran. If I can't go to BK tomorrow I will defiantly be annoyed.
I drove in due to total confusion. I know my line was down, but they never said whether Babylon trains were making stops at Valley Stream, or what level of service to expect at Lynbrook (only 1.6 miles away but no real parking and today did not seem like a great day to walk up Peninsula Blvd).
As I drove down Sunrise, I noticed people waiting at Valley Stream. That's a REALLY busy station to be left completely in the dark, especially with the Far Rock, Long Beach and West Hempstead lines all down.
If it's the same story tomorrow, I'll catch an Uber to Lybrook, where the LIRR is now (well after rush hour) saying that all Babylon trains will be stopping.
My neighbor told me that the trains were too full by the time they got to Lynbrook. He had to drive to Bellmore in order to get a spot on the train. Don't know what time this was at, but I would imagine Lynbrook will be extremely busy again if the other lines aren't back up in the morning. Good Luck!
