Default Glen Cove - Opinions

Hi - I'd like to know people's opinions on Glen Cove. It seems to be a big and diverse place in many ways. I never knew that it was actually a city apart from the towns of LI. Anyhow, if anyone could comment on any nice, more moderately priced areas (like less than 500K) that would be helpful. Also, what is the lirr commute like? Finally, what about the schools? I can't seem to find a map showing the correspondence between particular streets and particular schools. Thanks!

Default For those who may not be familiar with Glen Cove

For those who may not be familiar with Glen Cove:

Glen Cove is one of two cities (Long Beach is the other city) in Nassau County and is located in the north central part of Nassau County.

Glen Cove incorporated as a city in 1918 and became independent of the Town of Oyster Bay. Prior to that date, Glen Cove was a hamlet (unincorporated area) in the Town of Oyster Bay, initially in Queens County until January 1, 1899, and since then in Nassau County. Before it was called Glen Cove, the hamlet was called Musketa Cove.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the City of Glen Cove is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Village of Lattingtown and the Village of Matinecock in the Town of Oyster Bay; on the south by the Hamlet of Glen Head and the Village of Sea Cliff in the Town of Oyster Bay; and, on the west by Long Island Sound.

The City of Glen Cove has a different border than does the "Glen Cove, NY 11542" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" mailing address and not be in the City of Glen Cove): places that have a "Glen Cove, NY 11542" mailing address that are not in the City of Glen Cove are in the Village of Lattingtown (incorporated in 1931) and the Village of Matinecock (incorporated in 1928) in the Town of Oyster Bay.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County):

Glen Cove is kind of a whole world unto itself. It's mixed demographically and economically, Gold Coast mansions and Section 8 housing and still a large middle class. I've read a lot of posts on here that say the schools aren't too good, but I'd take that with a grain of salt. I have family that graduated from those schools and are all doing very well, including my dad! If you go to www.mynassauproperty.com and punch in the address of where you're thinking of living in "property search", it'll show you what school district that home is located in.

There's a large downtown area with pretty much anything you'll ever need, plenty of restaurants and bars, the main beach, Morgan Park, is absolutely stunning. LIRR takes about an hour to get to Penn Station, I believe only the 6AM train skips Jamaica. Under $500k you can probably find something very good in the Southridge section, which are small ranches but a nice suburban area. Other than that, prices vary and you'll have to look around. Might be limited to something smaller or older, but you can definitely find an attractive home in a great area of GC for that much money. You'll know the "bad" areas when you see them, honestly there aren't that many. Just keep your eyes open!

Glen Cove doesn't get too many replies on here for some reason, it's got a large population but it's kinda isolated from most of LI...good luck, hope this helps!

Default Glen Cove property overpriced in current market?

February 2008

My son is under contract to buy a 1928 improved SF colonial in Glen Cove. The most recent assessed market value is $592K and he's going to pay something like $650K. I think this price is too high because prices have been dropping since 2006. The seller has bought another property and is anxious to close the sale.

Any advice is appreciated.
