It was also called "Speak's" at least TWICE in its existence. I had a card from the management for that place (meaning I never had to pay a cover charge).

Another place I used to like that is still around (I think) is the Dublin Pub in New Hyde Park. Cover bands. I liked the house band (Boston Burglars). One of them owned it (but has since sold it). I used to have a card to get in free and skip the line for that one too.

I used to go to Speaks all the time in the 70's. I can't count how many times we saw Twisted Sister.

I remember the Malibu. I saw the Bosstones there in like 95 or 96, which must have been right before it closed.

The live music business must be tough considering so many of these places seem so short lived.

I remember going to Paradise/Industry and Voodoo. Going to see my friends' bands at Feb's/Hammerhedz. They got three dollars or something for everyone who had a flyer. Murphy's Law and Bile stick out in my head as big, local bands.

I still remember when WLIR finally went off. I went to work listening to Malibu Sue, and at lunchtime it was a Spanish station. I hadn't heard anything so I was totally confused.

I hear there's some kind of WLIR station in Eastern Suffolk. Anyone listen to it.

WLIR used to be on 107.1, but now broadcasts ESPN radio.
I blame The Morey Org (Jarad broadcasting) for the loss of WLIR. They got greedy and sold us out when they sold 92.7 to Univision.
Then they put WLIR on the weakest signal they had (107.1). 98.5 had a better signal and it should've gone there.
I dont even think they own any radio anymore, Party 105 and 98.5 were purchased by the station's manager, Vic Latino (used to be on 103.5 KTU).
I think its called JVC group now. Party 105 is the main station behind LI's club scene now and can be heard in Nassau on 101.5.

modmondays is on a distinguished road
I just had dinner a few months ago with the guitarist (now architect) from Swift Kick -- remember them?

Also:
a) Beggars Opera in Elmont (tons of rum and cokes drunk there)
b) Rum Bottoms "Wet T-Shirt Contests" during the week in 1977/78
c) Larry "The Duck" Dunn on WLIR (my band got heavy rotation with him and did on-air interviews there as well as played WLIR-hosted shows at Malibu in 1984
